Thursday 13 – What even is summer?

  1. I spent from late 2019 until Fall 2022 working from home. I found all online jobs before COVID even happened so I could quit my full-time office job that had begun to suck. SO, this meant I had summers “off”. When I went back to an office from ’22-’24, I missed that free time. Now that I am back to classroom teaching, summer is weird!
  2. For one, when I was doing online work and only going to the community college campus maybe 2 times a week, I never felt exhausted. But teaching high school exhausted me entirely and I was super ready for this summer.
  3. Now that I am there, and we have already taken our big vacation, I feel somewhat at a loss. It’s an odd feeling I cannot quite put my finger on.
  4. A teacher friend of mine posted to Facebook that she found herself feeling a little useless, since our lives are built upon this “thing” you must do each day FOR someone else. Without lesson planning or thinking of the day to day lectures and assignments, there’s for sure a feeling of “what good am I doing?”
  5. So, I am trying to sink myself into house things. Yesterday I pulled some weeds and I cleaned the area around my nightstand, which had become a holding ground for many a piece of junk. Today I have to do the grading for my online classes I sort of put off, and maybe start on some other things.
  6. It’s also supposed to rain so I woke the kids up earlier than they would have liked to get the back yard mowed. They did the front yesterday and were holding out hope that my oldest – who, to be fair, was supposed to mow while we were gone – was still planning to do it. I knew he wasn’t so, there ya go.
  7. I do love time to myself but there is truly only so much sitting around I can do. But there’s that fine line between sitting and motivation and sometimes it just cannot be conjured!
  8. OK, other stuff: watching A LOT of world cup. I love it! I have been a soccer fan for a while, especially as my kids, who played all the sports, whittled their talent down to just soccer. They don’t play anymore, which is sad, but I still watch. My teams are Liverpool and Aston Villa, so I am loving seeing all my players out there on their respective teams.
  9. We made a plan back in December to go to Atlanta during World Cup and watch games in bars with friends of ours who like soccer too. Sadly, they all bailed. Ok, one did and then the other tried to but I think we convinced him to come after all. The kicker is when someone says ok, agrees to be a part of it and pay, then leave you with the bill. Why are people like this? It’s so disappointing.
  10. I hoped for a second we wouldn’t go, since it’ll still cost a lot, but then we’d be like them, wouldn’t we?
  11. The lawnmower lost a nut that holds a bolt into the handle. Isaac couldn’t find it so we went to Lowe’s for a new one. We checked the size and threading and picked up a pack, only to find that it won’t screw in all the way. Sigh. So today, we have had to replace it again, as it already came off after half a yard. Why is it always something?
  12. We watched The Sheep Detectives last night and while it seems a very silly concept, it was actually really good! A cryer, in fact. I would definitely recommend it. The next one on our list is Power Ballad, because it is also pretty highly ranked as one of the year’s best. We’ll see!
  13. I am blasting through my grading and watching the clock, though not sure why. I guess because I know I need to get all this done asap and want it out of the way. Oh well. It’ll get done, just like it always does, you know?
