Wednesday ‘podge – Healthy balance

1. Monday was National Apple Day…did you eat an apple or enjoy something made with apples on Monday? Do you like apples? Do you prefer your apples raw, baked, or in cider? Do you have a favorite variety of apple?

Negative, I did not eat one. The kids go in phases of wanting them but we typically eat only bananas, strawberries, and grapes. I enjoy a Honeycrisp and I do enjoy apple-flavored treats but not anything green apple. Like, green apple Jolly Ranchers are the most disgusting thing ever. I DO enjoy apple cider but not hard cider. In fact, I really hate ciders of that type, especially apple. I don’t know why; it’s so similar.

2. Do you think there’s any truth to the saying ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’. Of the following healthy habits which do you find easiest to incorporate into your life and which is the most difficult for you to adopt-

adequate sleep, a balanced diet, plenty of water, eat breakfast, don’t smoke, exercise, limit alcohol,  include fruits and vegetables in your diet, manage stress, limit screen time

In a way, I do believe that, though not apples. More of the concept of balance and healthy things. I think for me, the easiest one to do is adequate sleep, but mostly because I find it easy to fall asleep. The hardest one is probably limiting alcohol. We just like beer too much.

3. Who taught you how to drive? Do you enjoy driving? Would you rather be the driver or the passenger?  Do you have a favorite scenic drive near you?

I’d say both my parents taught me. My mom more than my dad because he was prone to anger/overreacting. I do enjoy driving but I am typically the passenger because once, a long time ago, we had a deal where whoever had the newest car would be the main driver. However, we haven’t gotten a new car in a while so it’s been Ash forever and he hates it! Admittedly, now that we’ve been biking we’ve been taking my car more often because the bikes fit better. Not my photo but below you can see how they fit.

As far as scenic drives goes, we don’t have any people might talk about but I personally like the Centerville road up to Bradley’s country store. I talked about it many times before but for example, THIS post. If you drive north towards Thomasville, there’s a bunch of old plantation homes too so if you stop in, those are pretty scenic.

4. What small habit has had a big impact on your life?

Hmm, I’ll say quitting breakfast. HOWEVER, I might go back to breakfast and lunch and skip dinner from now on. I think changing from 3 meals to 2 is really what helped.

5. Tell us about something nice that happened to you recently.

Wow, I feel like this one shouldn’t be that difficult, you know? I guess every time my parents come through town, they take us out to eat. Not that we can’t afford it, of course, but it’s a little nicety that I appreciate.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Yesterday was another lecture-intensive day in the classroom but I think I handled it well. The students needed intro and thesis help. I walked out to my car after standing for a good long while in all those classes to see that I had a flat tire. And I mean, on the rim flat. Sigh. I called Ash but he was in a meeting so I went ahead and hit up my State Farm roadside assistance. A guy was out within 30 minutes! I was handling it all in stride too; sometimes I get overly upset about small things, as if it is personally against me, which is obviously not true.

I will say, as I stood there by my obviously flat tire, waiting, three – count them, THREE – other instructors at the state college came out to leave. All were men, two of them driving a Prius, and not one asked if I needed any help. What the hell has become of our society when men don’t at least ask a woman if she needs help? I mean, I always say that most people are who you think they are; I want them to surprise me but they never do.

I was going to take it to the tire place yesterday but it would have been right before closing time at 6 so it wasn’t worth it. I’ll drive it up there this morning then walk back. It’s only about a 30 min walk so I can get my exercise and morning sun anyway.

  1. Ugh to the flat tire. I think in some settings people are cautious about offering help because the world is so nuts right now. But in the school lot it seems like someone could have at least asked. I have not had any apple cider this fall and need to get some. I like it warmed the best. Have a good day!

  2. It’s an unpopular opinion, but think that feminism has been deleterious in our society. If men and women are equal in every single little thing, then chivalry has no place. Men aren’t needed as protectors. I think many men are of that mindset- we are all equal, no one should be a leader or helper to anyone else. Anyway, it’s too bad about the flat. Ugh- but *only* waiting 30 minutes doesn’t seem too bad! Agree it is super nice to be treated when out. Not necessary but a kind gesture. Have a great day!

    1. Oh I agree; telling women they can do anything has made them too hard; and you can’t go back now, you know? Or else you look extra weak. I don’t think men would see it that way but some women do.

  3. I have to remind or even force myself to drink water everyday. When I’m working outside and get sweaty I will make sure I drink some but not everyday. I’m thinking Maria nailed it on why men avoid ‘helping’ but there is a lot of selfishness that gets in the way, too. That is a nice treat that your parents take you out. Happy Hodgepodge!

  4. Flat tire = boo! Maybe those men worried that you’d be offended if a man offered to help a woman? Can’t we just all help each other out, regardless?

I eat breakfast and lunch, dinner isn’t really a thing anymore. Recommend.
We used to have a Honda Element. I really liked the functionality – we once were able to cram 5 bicycles in there! I don’t know why Honda stopped making them 😦

    1. Yes, I think a lot of women might be offended but then might take the help too. It’s like when they pretend they want to split the bill and when the guy says ok, they get mad. LOL.

You got 5 bikes in there? Wow! You must have taken the seats out entirely.

  5. For years, I have never ate breakfast, but as I get older, I need it. I don’t eat a lot of food. I stick to small portions for each meal, and that works for me. Eat less, move more!

  6. Eating two meals a day makes a huge impact for me as well! I hear so many people who agree…well, I often wonder why or how we ever started eating three (or more) times every day!!

  7. I am glad you got help for your tire. Sad that no one offered to help you. I have to eat 3 meals a day and I try to have a high protein breakfast. My doctor does not want me to lose any more weight. As soon as I eat carbs, I put weight in my middle. I wish it would go on the backside! I do enjoy Honeycrisp apples and apples add good fiber to the diet. Have a great weekend!
