Hello Monday -Rare day off

It’s been a weird weekend, guys. Weird. And we got the entirety of today off, but more on that later.

Friday had been declared a half day due to the uncertainty of the hurricane. While they were pretty sure it was going to hit Pensacola, these things can wobble. So I left at noon after a very quick school day. We had two assemblies that already had been planned before it was shortened, which meant classes were all of 17 minutes. Ugh. Anyway, I made plans to meet my husband and son (who stayed home from school because it was the last day of the quarter and he was caught up), but then he chose to go shopping for his girlfriend’s birthday. But my oldest got home and chose to come with. Normally it would have taken maybe 20-25 minutes to get to the hibachi place from work but due to traffic (government agencies also got out at 12) and rain, it took forty five!

Anyway, food was really good but my son acted like he didn’t want to be there. He’s been in a funk lately and it’s bothering me a lot. Ebbs and flows, I know.

We went home to relax and prepare for the storm. It did come east some but not enough to hurt us. We got a literal ton of rain and lots of wind but – THANK GOD – we didn’t lose power. We lose it on a sunny day so that was quite the miracle. We kept busy by watching movies and whatnot. Isaac was only at work about 2 hours because the restaurant was dead. Went to bed kind of early and tried not to worry about any storm damage in the night.

I woke up at 5 and let water out of the pool for the third time. So. Much. Water. But we were in a drought so I guess that was good. It was sunny and nice the morning after the storm and we didn’t have a lot of debris. My parents and sister didn’t fare as well. She and her boyfriend had their porch roof cave in; luckily they rent. They still don’t have power but the estimated restoration is Monday afternoon. My mom said they might come here but it sounds like they’re going to wait and see. I wouldn’t mind but it feels like jumping the gun. I suppose if it doesn’t come on by the end of the day, they’ll consider it.

Anyway, Saturday morning, I watched some soccer and continued to prep for our third in-club competition for our homebrew club. We had 11 entries for the Vienna lager! This is kind of a new thing for our club the past few years. We never used to do these but it has really gotten people brewing more, which had been our group’s problem in the past. Anyway, this one was slightly different because we normally make these a sort of party with food and can sharing after judging. Well, we’d planned to just judge then offered a little field trip to a local place for their Oktoberfest. Despite the smaller number of people who came, we did have six people judge and the winners were surprising. Ash and I got 3rd, which was quite the shock. But I’ll take it!

We then went to the Smitty’s Oktoberfest – about 10 of us. It was tasty and they had good beer for the event. We got home around 7/7:30 and we were both exhausted! I think it was a combination of not getting good sleep the night before and the stress of worrying about the storm. We were both asleep by 8 or so. Of course, that meant we were also wide awake at 3 am. Ash got up but I forced myself back to sleep for another couple hours.

Sunday, I cleaned up some, started laundry, and made guacamole. Ash did his run and then he fell asleep shortly before noon. Our sleep is all messed up! I ran to Target for a few things, then we watched football. It was weird because my oldest didn’t feel like watching with and my middle, who always watches, had been hanging out with his girlfriend since Saturday. It was late the night before and he’s technically not supposed to drive after 11 unless going to and from work, so the girlfriend’s mom put him up on the couch. Then Sunday, they went to the beach. I literally still haven’t seen him, as he got home after I went to sleep last night! I love that my kids are older and have their own lives but also, ugh.

This is especially painful as this week, I am solo parenting. Ash is gone all week to a conference so it’ll all be on me. As noted, today was supposed to be a half day teacher work day for me but since my school’s “district” (diocese) is based in Pensacola, they canceled it. We are to work from home and finalize quarter one grades, which I am working on now. I really want to utilize my time; I may even run or do some extra yard things. I need to take Isaac shopping for clothes for Homecoming too, though I am sure that will be annoying. The big box mall stores are basically useless now so where else does one get nice clothes? I have no idea!

  1. I’m glad you kept your power on and hope those in your family who lost theirs have it restored quickly. I have no idea where to buy nice clothes for boys now. Department stores used to be a go to for that sort of thing, but shopping is all over the map now. Good luck with that. I hope he comes out of his funk soon. We sense things about our children and know when they’re not themselves. Hope you have a nice day off!
