Thursday 13 – Is it Friday yet?

  1. Sadly, no. But today does seem to be zipping right along. I am proctoring PSATs and if all goes well, should be leaving mid-day.
  2. We are keeping an eye on the gulf hurricane. For now, it is heading towards Pensacola, where my parents and my sister both live. We’ve been through storms many times (I grew up in South Florida and weathered Andrew) so they know what to do.
  3. Essentially, you make sure you have batteries and a light source, water, and you hunker down and ride it out. Panic buying is something people do because they’re too dumb to think logically, IN MY OPINION.
  4. On a nicer note, I have been rediscovering Yngwie Malmsteen on my way in to work lately. He’s one of the best guitarists of our time and despite the fact he’s been described as a “noodler”, he’s fantastic and some of those albums rock. You know, there’s really no good music anymore; I’m convinced. You have to go back at least 10 years, if not longer.
  5. My Juniors have been writing their own Declaration of Independence and it’s so funny to work through things with them because they totally take that document for granted. They’re also so lost on rhetorical strategies, which is so sad that they never learned this before. I got you, guys. I got you.
  6. We did get the pool cover on last night, as noted in a previous post. It wasn’t all that hard; I used Elliot’s nice leaf machine to clean the bottom, then I shocked it, skimmed, then brushed. Then Dakota went around and loosened all the bolts, Isaac and Ash got the cover out and then went around, putting it on. Start to finish, all that only took an hour. If we get a lot of wind with being on the east side of this storm, we won’t regret it!
  7. During Hurricane Michael On October 10th, 2018 – which, by the way, is not being mentioned as “season’s latest storm”, for some reason – we didn’t have a cover and dredging a foot of tree debris from the bottom of an already cold pool was no fun at all!
  8. I was talking to a coworker of mine who is only a little older than me and she is always so put together. We commiserate a lot on stuff at work and I would never have guessed when she told me she’s been so down lately with nothing to look forward to. I feel that but I try really hard to stay positive and give myself incentives. I think women of our age, with kids getting older and not needing us as much, really need to find the things to fill in the gaps of our lives.
  9. We also both agreed that while we love our husbands dearly, we also love when they leave the house. LOL. Sounds awful, I know. But I am so rarely alone that I long for a day in the house by myself! To be fair, Ash goes to a conference next week and while it’ll be me holding down the fort with the kids, I will have some quiet time to myself. I may even ::gasp:: read.
  10. I started a book by an author I previously liked and so far, I am not loving this story. The dialogue feels fake and stilted to me and maybe it’s just because I am teaching creative writing this term that I’ve been watching so many videos about writing, so I’m being extra judgy.
  11. We have been watching a lot of Paul Verhoeven movies lately and they’re pretty good. He’s an excellent director, though seems to take on scripts with a lot of…rawness and grittiness. Which I enjoy, for the most part. He’s best known for Robocop, which of course we’ve seen a lot but rewatched and it definitely holds up, for a low budget sci-fi.
  12. We have been so busy we haven’t watched as many horror movies as I’d have liked so far into October. We did see Clown in a Cornfield but, well, I fell asleep. It happens!
  13. OK, that’s all I’ve got for you all today. I’m going to keep monitoring my kids taking a test and then high-tail it home!
