- Yesterday, we got an email saying that faculty had a short meeting after work. We all assumed it was to talk about final exams, which begin today. But when I walked in and saw the superintendent, I knew it was something else. I was right: they fired the principal. Our school is a very small Catholic private school and is suffering from low enrollment and issues keeping teachers. A couple weeks ago, they sent in an analyst who goes around and creates action plans for schools so his report is what informed their decisions. I mean, I suppose it is a good thing in the end. For a little bit I was worried but my contract came through (even with a tiny bump in pay) so I can breathe easy for a little bit anyway. I am sure this means some kind of changes but hey, isn’t that life?
- I’m learning, in my middle years, to roll with the punches as best I can. I know that stress is hard on your body so I am trying to mitigate it. I used to worry myself into a tizzy but to what end? Most of the time, the worrying didn’t solve any problems and some of the stuff I worried about never even came to fruition anyway.
- Switching gears, yesterday we got a lot done. I told you how we spend our M-W (and especially Mondays because when you aren’t eating, you have to keep busy) doing yard or house work. Well, we’d had a messy garage since November, which prevented my husband from parking in there. Now that both boys have a car and my oldest, once he gets his own pool route, will be parking the work truck at the house too, we needed to reclaim that space. It honestly took us less than an hour to rearrange the pool shed so we could take some things from the garage out and then arrange that space. Funny how quickly you can get stuff done if you put your mind to it/back into it. Helps too when your kids pitch in. My younger two really helped a lot.
- After, we watched a movie and then took a walk, which was neat for the wildlife. We left the house around 8:45 and proceeded to see: fireflies, a fox, three owls hunting, a toad, and a whole bunch of bats. I made a note to always take our walk around that time from now on; there’s something very cool and primal about seeing all the animals that reside around us. Had we not even gone outside we’d not know how the owl trio was stalking the tiny creatures that live in our yards.
- Additionally, we saw the crescent moon and both Venus and Jupiter. Sometimes when the hassles of our constructed life become too much, I find myself slowing down and appreciating the world around me. There’s a lot more going on than just my little corner of the Universe.
- I’m administering my first exam and while AI told me it should take about 65-75 minutes, some kids appear to be done after 45. I worry they aren’t writing enough or being specific enough. Oh well. I know the difficulty of it and if they half-ass it, well, that is on them, you know?
- They have a half day and while we are “expected” to stay all day, it’s always sort of this anomalous thing where no one is really looking for us but we have a rule to abide by. I’m playing it by ear anyway. I recall that at midterms time as well. It’s especially strange without an actual principal! The Dean stepped in but now he’s busy doing two jobs.
- Not sure what we’ll busy ourselves with tonight but I know there is always something. Thursday we’re going to trivia, which I am looking forward to. Tomorrow night I’m going with my sons to my eldest’s girlfriend’s graduation. Just what I wanted to do this week: sit through two graduation ceremonies!
- This week’s Monday fast was easier than last week, I would say. I know in time it gets easier; I’ve been here before. Not gonna lie though: looking forward to eating! I have a meat stick, piece of cheese, a hard boiled egg, pecans, and some dried edamame today. I’m aiming to eat at 11, but we’ll see.
- The countdown is on; praying I can make it through to this weekend and then enjoy my off time soon.
Wow, it´s kinda crazy the principal got the ax so close to the end of the school year. They really wanted him or her gone!! I have family members that work for a very small Christian college. While not the same thing as HS, obviously, it´s somewhat the same concept in that you have to sell a product that´s more expensive than its competition (or in high school´s case, the competition is free!) and low enrollment is a constant concern. You guys do stay busy! I like to be home when I´m done with school but it´s not always possible. Testing days are nice! I hope you got to go home early :).
