- Late Friday night, when I went back downstairs to grab some water after Isaac had come home at almost midnight, I turned on the kitchen light to find a giant Palmetto bug in my kitchen. These were common in South Florida but I don’t often see them here. It was perched on the valance over the sink window and, as they are known to do, flew right at me when I came for it with my shoe. I shuffled backwards towards the oven and whatever I hit the back of my heel on really scuffed me up. I am feeling it today.
- We watched an old movie called Demons on Sunday and it was actually pretty good. We are working our way through horrors and this was one of those Italian ones with American actors and English dubs, even though the actors spoke English lines. Funny enough, it was filmed in West Berlin and based on the date, was actually before the wall fell. Kind of neat, actually.
- We also watched a movie called Year of the Dragon, which was not too bad. It stars Mickey Rourke before his facial reconstruction. He actually sort of looks like Bruce Willis in it, somehow. It was a little too long but pretty enjoyable.
- When we went to Boston, I realized how much I love dumplings, since we stayed in Chinatown. I always liked pot stickers but most of the ones I get at the store are just ok. We have a place here that no longer does it but once had a lunch buffet with steamed dumplings that were SO good. So it turns out that these are typically called Dim Sum – had no idea what that was – and I wish we had a good place for them here! However, I found some pork soup dumplings in the frozen section at Target and I must say, they are tasty!
- Monday flew by; not sure how that was possible but it was nice. I got home and we made brats and I had a big salad. We then just sat and I was insanely tired. But maybe I really needed to catch up on sleep because today, I feel much better.
- Before I went home yesterday I was talking to a co-worker about how I had to get the two front tires for my son’s car after his Saturday debacle and she related a story from a few years ago. Well, ok, many years ago. She was complaining about having to put tires on one of her kid’s cars back in the day to the then-principal of this school. She said, angrily and feeling stressed, “what happened to ‘God will provide’?” And the principal said he does of course but when she scoffed he asked “Well, could you buy the tires?” And of course, she could. And his point was, God DID provide. That really stuck with me!
- I think I talked about it last week but since I have been taking my daughter to school early for cross country, the neighborhood road keeps striking in me comforting yet yearning memories of when I worked from home and ran all the time – specifically on this one road. I’d get everyone off to school, come home and change, then go back out for 5-8 miles. And it was such a nice way to start the day! I have got to find time to infuse running back into my life.
- I think it is the transition into Fall that does it to me; I am ready for that fall feeling of football and getting together with people and other school sports and the kids really getting into the swing of the semester and then, oh, the holiday season! Once we get into October it’s just holidays.com. LOL.
- I got a text late Sunday evening from a friend who is trying to throw something together for another friend for Friday, right before her birthday. The thing is, I actually have TWO things happening that night: we have a meeting for brew club and then Ash has a fantasy draft and we always meet up with the guy who runs this one. It’s the only time we really see him because he’s busy and has a young family. I told my friend I might be able to swing by for a little while in between and while I feel bad about that, I also have plans and live and die by my calendar. Granted, even if she’d told me even two weeks ago, I’d already have been double booked.
- This time of year is just like that. Tonight is my only free night this week. Tomorrow we have the first cross country meet and directly after, a fantasy draft, Thursday is open house for my school, then Friday, the aforementioned two things. Elliot turns 19 this weekend and while I don’t think I will see him much Saturday (he’ll be on campus and going to a game with his girlfriend) we’ll probably do his birthday dinner Sunday, so long as Isaac isn’t working. Next week is no different: a meet, a draft, a small get-together. Don’t get me wrong: I am glad to have plans!

I hope your soreness goes away soon. Sounds like you guys are keeping busy, which, like you said, is not a bad thing at all! The pastor at our old church used to point out that if you own a car, that means you are better off than about 90% of the world’s population. That’s the percentage of adults globally that don’t own vehicles. Of course we compare ourselves and our situation to those closest to us; if we hate what we drive, it doesn’t help too much to know that a person in a developing country would love to be able to afford the vehicle that we have. But it puts it in perspective.
