Wednesday ‘Podge – Fly far far away

1. August 19th is National Aviation Day…do you like to fly? Last time you were on an airplane? The date is chosen in honor of the history and development of aviation, and celebrated on the birthday of Orville Wright. Have you ever been to the Kitty Hawk area of North Carolina? The city of Dayton in Ohio (their birthplace)

I was last on a plane on June 10th, when we flew to Boston and I don’t particularly like flying; I do it more than I would like however. I have not been to that place in NC but we have driven through Dayton.

2. In what area of your life do you tend to ‘wing it’? Is this an area you should be winging?

LOL, sometimes, teaching! Which is funny because it’s my job. Ha ha, I mean, I have been doing it a long time so some days I can wing it and other times, I plan. It probably is on I should wing less but it has worked out so far.

3. A favorite book, song, or movie that relates to flight in some way?

Ha, actually, the first thing I thought of was an old Disney ride, DreamFlight. I can’t think of anything else!

4. Soft serve, gelato, sherbet, frozen yogurt, or good old fashioned ice cream…what’s your pleasure? Your favorite flavor? How often do you indulge?

Hmm, I think if I’m going to do it, I’d go regular ice cream, but it depends from where. Do you have Bruster’s where you’re from. It’s our favorite. But to be fair, we don’t eat that stuff at all. If I do, I usually want something with either caramel or cherries.

5. I never get tired of_____________________.

I am not sure I can answer this; even stuff I love, I get a little tired of at some point. I love NFL but by late December, I am sick of watching. Same with watching movies or soccer or running. I guess…I’ll say I never get tired of seeing a really great sunset.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I’m writing this Tuesday and I feel far more prepared today for work than yesterday. I slept really well last night and my morning didn’t feel rushed or anything. I always struggle with transitions. I love summer and have a tough time letting it go into Fall, though Fall is so awesome. I like summer break and struggle getting back into the swing of the school year but before you know it, we’re a few weeks in and it feels normal. When I’ve been driving to my daughter’s school early this week, I realized how much I miss walking in the neighborhood. It’s just been too hot, even after the sun goes down. I am ready for that time to return.

I am still not exactly happy about my planning periods this year but I’ll live. I love not teaching first period because I have time to plan. And I am enjoying having fourth and then lunch back to back. But 5th-7th is a long haul to the end of the day and then I am tired. I have 30 minutes after school to get stuff done but sometimes I chat with coworkers or, you know, stare off into the distance.

OK, Wednesday now and I am resigning myself to the longer morning commute, since Dakota made the cross country team, which we assumed of course, but you just never know! So I have to go about 4.5 miles east before going back southwest to work. I drive out of her school by about 7:20 and arrive to work just shy of 7:50. It’s annoying but the season is really only about 6 weeks. Her first meet is next week and of course, Ash already has something so, I guess it’ll be me out there. We’ve been here before; this is my ninth year as a cross country parent! I am trying to convince her to do it in high school. The boys didn’t, though Elliot wanted to. He broke his leg in April of 8th grade so even though he was in a boot, he went on the high school summer trip. Once school began though, he decided not to run. I am sure it would be crazy to have a high schooler running, since that involves out of town meets, but we’d make it happen.

We saw a fantastic sunrise today and my daughter said those make her hopeful. And you know, she’s not wrong. It’s been a good day for me so far: I got an extra section of online teaching, which means I can save money! Happy Wednesday everyone.

  1. I love a beautiful sunrise and agree there is something hopeful about it. A clean slate to start the day. I’m sue you’ll figure out the routine soon and like you say CC isn’t a long season. I remember the Disney ride. I haven’t been to Disney in a long long time. It holds far less appeal for me now than it did when my girls were young and we were all a bit in the dark about some of what was going on behind the scenes. Enjoy your day!

  2. I had a long term sub job with plan first thing. I also didn’t have students the first 15 minutes because I was teaching SPED so I had no homeroom. I always got to school early to avoid traffic. Bottom line- I was at the school for two hours before I had students in my room! It was crazy. Then I had them the rest of the day of course. Congrats to your daughter on making the team. High school was fun for us the year our daughter improved her time by three minutes and moved up to varsity pretty quickly.

  3. I have never been on a plane and I really don’t like the idea of flying. It sounds like you have the experience to be able to wing it at teaching. hehehe I used to struggle getting back into a routine after the summer break. Well done to Dakota making the cross country team.

  4. They don’t have that ride at Disneyland. I do enjoy Disneyland and finally get to go back next week! I have the lowest pass and can’t go in the summer. I was born 3 weeks after Disneyland opened and have gone all my life. I always feel like a kid when I am there. I am rarely up early to catch a sunrise, but when I do, I enjoy it. Have a grat teaching year and I am sure you are a great teacher!

  5. I love a beautiful sunrise. Best of luck with heading back to work and early morning cross country practices. I am a school secretary and headed back to work next week and I am not looking forward to it; although I could probably use some routine in my life…
