Just got back from taking my daughter for her last full week of camp…ever. She will be too old next year BUT she can be a junior counselor and get volunteer hours.
Anyway, the weekend. As noted in my Friday post, I was trying to get all my work done prior to about 10:45 because Isaac and I met Ash at the theater to see The Odyssey, which was indeed an epic experience. You have to see it in the theater and preferably the Dolby one. It’s such an immersive experience, I don’t think a regular theater or your home will do it justice. I liked it a lot and even some of the dumb casting choices people complained about were not enough to pull me out of it or make me dislike it. We all really enjoyed the movie and went home still raving about it.
I drove up to get Dakota and then we had a beer before heading to our EC meeting with the homebrew folks. We used to go to a place called Growler Country all the time. It was our favorite hangout because they were close to the house, had a ton of beer on tap that rotated often, good food, and a cool atmosphere. They closed their location probably 3 years ago and bought an old bank building in a neighborhood about 15 minutes from us. Well, it took forever for them to get permitting, etc so it became a running joke in town that they were reopening because despite the numerous ads claiming such, it was just not happening. Well, about a month ago they finally did reopen so we gave it a go. Food was just as good as before, with some new menu items. The area itself was sort of like the old vibe but not quite the same, but it was a little warm inside and their beer selection was pretty mid. Oh well; we had business to tend to anyway.
Saturday was a weird day because we didn’t have anything to do until 5:30. So I cleaned and we did some small projects. One of the upstairs windows had been falling down at one corner for a while and we had jammed some cloth in there but it fell too and before we knew it, a dirt dobber had made a home. So Ash had to get on the roof and fix it. But, success. We also fixed a handle on the piece of furniture a friend built us that serves as a bench but also, houses the grill. We made bratwursts and I felt like eating jalapeno poppers so I made those too. We watched a couple movies (Halloween III and started a movie called Homework, but we had to leave) before heading to the aforementioned couples diaper party. On the way, we both were trepidatious because aside from the parents-to-be, we didn’t know anyone else. But it turned out just fine. It was mostly their neighborhood friends and they were all super cool and welcoming. We had fun playing some themed games and meeting and talking to a variety of people. In the end, we were invited to their neighborhood beer fest they have every October. And of course, we’re now on the hook to bring a keg of homebrew. Dakota’s friend came back with us to the spend the night.

Sunday was more chill with no plans at all. After taking the friend home, we hit the store for some bread then I made a big lunch around 11. The kids loved my chicken, mashed potatoes, and green beans, but it’s a meal that involves a lot of prep, cooking, and cleaning. But I got all that done before sitting down to finish that Homework movie, then we watched one from 1981 called Evilspeak, which was actually really good. After that, we did a bit of bowling, a bit of swimming, then to be honest, Ash and I were both seriously tired. We got in bed close to seven and I ended up sleeping until maybe 9 then getting up for an hour before going back. He, on the other hand, slept until 2 and got up. He went back to bed at 6 and is still there now. I think we have been burning the candle at both ends this summer and it finally caught up with us.
I’m not feeling amazing so I am thinking that if he ends up not going to work, I am going to suggest going to get a greasy burger, which sounds really good. We didn’t end up having dinner last night so I feel like I need some comfort food. Last full week of summer break for me. I have to go back for teacher in-service starting on the 3rd. I know I just have to accept it but I am reluctant, for sure. But that’s life and I will get over it and be back in the swing of things in no time.
