A to Z Challenge – Y is for You Spund Me Right Round

As noted in the sign up post, I decided to highlight beers I have liked. I know this sounds very surface but a lot of my personal life/hobbies revolve around it. We are homebrewers and I have – as of today – 4,607 unique check-ins on the app, Untappd. I keep track of all beers and rate them there. So, without further ado – Y!

I know what you’re thinking – did I write it wrong? Do I mean “spun” or “spin” or “sound”? Nope. I actually mean Spund, as in “spunding is the process of trapping the naturally occurring cO2 that is created during fermentation inside the fermenter so that it absorbs into the wort as it turns into beer”.

Brieux Carre in New Orleans apparently used this method in their Czech Pilsner that was, for my money, the best I’ve had outside the Czech Republic! Here we are when we first got to town and were waiting on the rest of our party. Isaac did NOT want to be there.

I could see us doing this at some point as well. It takes a few extra gadgets to get it to work but maybe. We are planning to brew a Czech pilsner this coming weekend and if we can nail it, that would be awesome. Our original goal in brewing was to have ours on tap and it’s cheaper than buying in the store. But there’s always x-factors and for a while, we made OK beer and ended up sharing it with the club, taking it to events, and having it available at parties. But now that we’ve been making beer we like to drink we’re brewing more so it’s always around – for us!
