Wednesday ‘Podge – Oh yeah, there’s a post today

I got so used to not blogging while away that I forgot about this!

1. On July 29th 1957 The Tonite Show premiered with Jack Parr as it’s host. This marked the beginning of the modern day talk show. Do you watch any daytime or late night talk shows today? Do you have any thoughts on the hubbub surrounding the cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, or are you more in the camp of ‘who is Stephen Colbert?

I used to watch Leno and then Jimmy Fallon and I was well aware of the late shows before my time. But honestly, I think these have run their course. For starters, people mostly don’t watch live TV anymore, unless it’s sports. We have streaming and that sort of precludes having to stay up. I also think these shows switched from being fun and neutral to being another way to push agendas and opinions, and nobody wants that anymore either. I never watched Colbert so it’s not a big deal he got canceled.

2. What’s the best part of your day?

Depends on the day! I would usually say the minutes after I take my first sip of coffee but it could also be the moment dinner has been eaten and the kitchen is clean and my husband and I can either play a game together and watch a movie. Heading into a new job soon, my schedule will change so the answer to this question could too!

3. What’s something your generation does that you actually dislike?

Hmm, not sure I have a good answer. I’m Gen-x and we’re tough as nails and disparaging towards Millennials, which I actually do agree with. LOL. If I had to pick something, it’s when people in my gen blame baby boomers for the economy. Yeah, maybe it’s true but I mean, you make your life what you will.

4. When you cook do you clean as you go, or clean it all up once you’re finished cooking? What’s the last thing you cooked/baked in your own kitchen?

That depends on the meal. When I am making my big Thanksgiving meal (and I make it a few times a year, actually) I do clean as I go. I prep my cornbread and mac and cheese and wash all those bowls, etc… after they’re assembled. But I typically just wash everything at the end. The last thing I cooked was last night; I made pan-seared chicken, mashed potatoes, and Southern green beans. It had been 2 weeks since I had cooked, since I wasn’t here!

5. Sum up your July in ten words or less.

Got a job. Rode my bike a lot. Almost over!

6. Insert your own random thought here.

We got home late Sunday night, so on Monday I spent a lot of time getting back into regular life. I caught up on work work, then tidied the house, though I had not yet unpacked. Yesterday, I did all the unpacking and didn’t open my laptop once! Of course, today I have a ton of grading to do. I did mow over some areas my daughter missed in the back yard and did a quick pool vacuum (I picked up a small hand held vac for in-between pool guy visits and it has been worth it!). Then I washed a ton of laundry, unpacked all our RAGBRAI stuff, and then by evening, I was feeling like I was getting sick. Funny enough, as we got closer to Florida on our drive home Sunday, I was feeling like I had allergies. Not sure that it was because really, I have a ton of mucus. Could be a head cold from the fall out from all that working out. Riding your bike seven days in a row through multiple locations has to have some kind of consequence, I assume.

Today I’ll be grading and planning dinner and making sure my ducks are in a row. Was supposed to have a new teacher orientation tomorrow but apparently it was canceled and moved to next week. We all meet next week, something like 8-3 every day. I assume this is the same for everyone who teaches high school, public or private. Looking forward to meeting the other teachers and seeing how they lesson plan. In college, we have plans but they are a little loose. I know you have to be a little more ahead in h.s. I also have to figure out dress code, etc.

I keep having dreams I am riding my bike; I guess this is normal fallout because others have posted about it too. I think I’ll do a Thursday 13 post with some random observations about our ride, if you’re interested.

  1. In general it feels like there is a lot of blame between generations these days, for all sorts of things. You sound like you had a very productive day and I’m sure it feels good to be home and probably to have a meal ou made yourself. I love eating out, but after a week of it I want home cooking. I’m sorry you’re feeling unwell, and hoping you feel better soon before the new job starts up. Take care of yourself!

  2. I have realised I don’t watch that much live TV unless it’s sports too.
I love that feeling on an evening when the kitchen is clean and I can relax. Good luck with the new job.

  3. I agree with you on everything and am the same way about cooking. How nice was it to have the all day meeting moved to next week? Can you believe you’re going to be a high school teacher? I mean, of course you can do it. A teaching degree doesn’t confer on anyone an ability that someone without one doesn’t have. I will be so curious to see how you like it/what you think. You will have all the thoughts, I’m sure (whether or not you list them here is for you to decide, lol).
