Hello Monday – A new dawn, a new day

My morning didn’t exactly start the way I wanted; I was sitting in my chair about to take my first sip of coffee when I felt something on my neck. It was a roach! We do live in Florida so this is actually normal but I don’t have those in my house…ever! I guess it is time to spray Home Defense again. Gross. My husband said it was meant to be because it pushed me to get on my laptop earlier. Good point.

SO, Friday. As mentioned, my husband and son were slated to get home that day. They had been gone eight days and that was day nine. Camp was closed for the fourth so my daughter and I ran to Target and then the store for some last minute things for Ash’s birthday meal. In between those two places we stopped at a little park by the lakes here and picked up some boiled peanuts from a family out there selling, which I thought was cool. The boys got in around 1:15 and my oldest picked them up because I was busy cooking. I literally took zero photos but suffice to say, everyone was happy to eat and have those two members of the family home!

We just watched some movies in the evening and caught up on some of their trip. Both of them were pretty tired, I’d say, from the long travel day and the red eye flight. Sadly of course, people were doing fireworks when we were trying to sleep. I can tolerate them but it did seem like a lot more than usual this year.

Saturday I woke at 6 to start prepping for our 65 mile ride. (It was also Ash’s birthday but we didn’t really do any celebrating.) We tacked the additional five onto the start of our ride, which is always good to do but I didn’t like the area we went through. Oh well. We stopped after 25 miles for about 5 minutes, then went another 15 before stopping for some food. Sadly, we missed breakfast at Rocky’s so Ash had a donut they still had out and I had a chicken finger. The nice old lady behind the counter said that with the holiday weekend, they ran out of biscuits early anyway.

Went back another 15 and stopped at our normal little place; had some eggs and toast. Then it was onto the final 10. I wasn’t tired and nothing really hurt, other than some general undercarriage discomfort. I wasn’t exhausted or dehydrated, which is nice. We got home a little after 2, showered, then I ran up to Costco for gas and then picked up some food. We mostly ate some leftovers and spent a bit of time bowling and doing our normal things before heading out to Monticello for the yearly fireworks with friends. We didn’t want to be there too early and I think the time we allotted was right.

Woke up Sunday a little worn; knees hurting a bit. We got on the bikes around maybe 7:45/8 and Ash and I both did 20, though in different areas. We have a 5 mile loop we do four times; I did it twice then came back closer to the house and carved out a two mile loop and did it five times. It was actually hilly too, but not as hilly as the other area. I made chicken alfredo, got laundry going, then made Ash’s birthday cake. We then threw on Independence Day, because that’s a yearly watch! Somewhere in there I frosted said cake and while we didn’t blow out any candles, everyone enjoyed it. In the evening I sat outside with my daughter while she swam and then came in to finish laundry and pass out! I was so tired. Luckily, I think I got good sleep last night.

This morning, I have to take my daughter to camp and then I have an interview at 9 for a private school. Not entirely sure it’s a job I’d love but I do think my background in teaching college should count for something; it’s a Catholic high school so we shall see. I think my idea was to have breaks during the year and that’s why I started applying for teaching. I have been enjoying this summer of not having to go anywhere. Funny part is, I really only had that for maybe three years when I began working from home only. Around ’22 I got a summer gig on campus and then after that, the job at the Legislature. And while Summer was quiet, I still had to go every day and find something to do. Better to just be at home! I am still hoping to hear from that Elder Services admin position soon but in the meantime, wish me luck on this interview!

  1. That’s a lot of biking! You should be in good shape for Raggbrai. Good luck with the job interview and happy birthday to your hubs!

  2. I hope the interview went well!! Teaching high school would not be for the faint of heart but you don’t strike me as the faint of heart kind of person :). I think it would help having teens for kids- you really are accustomed to some of the irrational, moody behavior. Congrats on riding so much this weekend!

    1. Right; having kids and having taught college freshmen (which really are not that far off from high schoolers) would definitely be my strength and it seemed like the principal thought so too. We’ll see! Might be more than I can handle but also, the hours are better.
