Wednesday ‘Podge – The letter of the day is H

1. What’s a lesson you’ve learned from a mistake?

I won’t be specific since the one I am thinking of is from high school but let’s just say I learned to always be honest because one lie might lead to another and then you have to remember the lie you told and it gets really messy.

2. Do you salt food while you’re cooking or let diners add their own?  What’s a food you think must be salted? Do you like pepper?

That really depends on the meal. For things like green beans or mashed potatoes, no. For the chicken I pan sear, yes. I put salt, pepper, onion and garlic powder. For me, scrambled eggs must be salted. Everything else I wait and see but I generally do not rush to over-season. I like pepper ok; I always think of how my mom puts it on her cole slaw, no matter where we are, without tasting it first and I think that’s not right.

3. What was the last gathering you attended and what did you do there?

Hmm, I guess it was the Hogtown beer festival last weekend. We worked with fellow homebrewers from our club to serve beer to attendees. We also rubbed elbows with other homebrewers and commercial brewers (and friends) we know in Gainesville.

4. Your favorite shade of purple? What’s your favorite purple flower?

Hmm, I guess a dark purple would be my favorite. A favorite flower would have to be wisteria.

5. Share a favorite spring travel memory.

It’s lame but I don’t have one. I don’t recall ever going anywhere for Spring Break and then, once I had kids, I always worked.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Oldest son is sick so I am taking my middle to school in a minute. It’s sort of outside my realm of beliefs; if you can’t get a ride, you take the bus. But this one hasn’t ridden the bus in the morning since he began high school and it definitely comes too early.

I don’t know why I still feel this sort of unsettled feeling. I guess just with the semester winding down, I have this timeline of events I feel must happen: one of my pending online sections must make so I have 2; get full time job so I don’t have to worry about cobbling together online work; then, if I get one of those jobs, I have to deal with the fact that I’ll need to tell them about our 2 big trips we already have on the books. Will they let me take leave I have not yet gained? It’s all such a stressful thing but at the same time, I am well aware that worrying about things that have not happened and may not even happen in that way, is a complete waste of time and just a stressor on my mind and body.

So my focus today is to get my H a to z post done after I take my son to school, get ready for class, teach class (while getting a lot of grading done in between) go to the auto parts store and Publix, and most importantly: slow down my thoughts so I don’t go thinking about things that may or may not happen!

  1. Slowing down your thinking is a good way to put it when you’re feeling stress. Our thoughts can really run away with us. I put my H post in the HP today. It felt like too much to do two today. I keep hoping to get a day ahead, but not happening so far. We typically didn’t take spring break trips as kids, or even when our own were little. We took a lot of trips once we moved to the UK because we wanted to take advantage of the opportunities there. I did do a college spring break trip which was fun. Hope things work out in a positive way regarding work, as I’m certain they will. Have a great day!

  2. Eek! I have always told my girls the same about lying. It causes so much trouble.
The beer festival sounds like a great event.
I hope your son is feeling better soon and everything works out with the job.

  3. My son was good friends with our next door neighbor who was two grades ahead of him. So, the neighbor gave him a ride once he got his license. But occasionally, when the neighbor didn’t go to school and my son had to find a different way to school, he claimed that he couldn’t take the bus because he didn’t know what number to get on. Which I’m sure we could have found out. He acted like riding the bus was the worst fate that could befall him! I usually just took him. He was spoiled! My family never took spring break trips when I was younger and we didn’t take them every year that my kids were younger. I hope your oldest starts to feel better soon!

  4. I agree — lying is never a good idea. So complicated. And I hope your thoughts slow down and that you get a job which allows you to take your leave. I always feel like if they really want to hire you, then preplanned vacations shouldn’t affect that.
