Wednesday ‘Podge – Feeling Green

1. I write the Hodgepodge questions so they’ll post on Sunday, which sometimes throws me off in terms of what day it is. St. Patrick’s Day will be celebrated on Monday, March 17th. Did you mark the day in some way? Wear green? Make a special meal? Watch or participate in a parade?

I kind of forgot about it, since I had to go back to campus for the first time in 14 days and then I had an interview. When I got home, I went to dinner with my husband and daughter and only then did I realize it was St. Patrick’s Day because all the people in green celebrating at Bumpa’s tipped me off!

2. Do you think luck plays a part in your life? Explain.

I think a certain portion of life is random happenstance, which we interpret as luck. It seems like some people are luckier than others (this tends to be my husband) but honestly, I can’t believe it’s luck so much as either God or the dice roll of life.

3. Of the 15 green foods listed, which one is your favorite and how do you like it prepared? Any on the list that are a hard no for you? In general do you like fruits and veggies? As a kid did you eat them willingly or did you hide peas in your napkin hoping your momma wouldn’t see?

Asparagus, avocado, broccoli, celery, cucumber, grape, green bean, kale, kiwi, lettuce, lime, pear, peas, pistachios, spinach

Hmm, that’s tough: can I say toss-up between avocado and asparagus? Ooh, I also live spinach and pistachios. Let’s go avocado and in guacamole! But if we went asparagus, I enjoy it air fried. I douse it in olive oil, salt, pepper, and garlic salt and air fry it until soft. Yum. None of those are really a hard no for me. If I was pressed, I’d pass on peas. I never really had issues with those as a kid; maybe broccoli for a time because I do remember seeing an opportunity to chuck a bite I wasn’t feeling when my dad went outside to check something during a meal. He was onto me though. My sister, on the other hand, would literally keep a bite of broccoli in her mouth for hours, refusing to swallow. We’d do entire walks in the mall post-dinner and she’d hang onto it like a chipmunk.

4. What’s something that makes you ‘turn green’? (with envy or with illness… whichever way you want to take it)

I get car sick. And it’s not every time but certainly, back seats will do it. I do better as the driver. And reading in the car? Forget it!

5. Did you spend a lot of time outdoors as a child? Doing what? Do you spend a lot of time outdoors now? Doing what?

Oh yes, very much. We lived in South Florida so it was decent weather. I remember riding my bike a lot, playing in the backyard, going to the beach, etc. Now, I would say I do spend less time outside but still enjoy it. We walk at least 3-4 times a week and try to get out to run or bike. Sometimes on days I am home by myself I will sit in the sun for 15-20 minutes. I’m like Superman; I need the sun to recharge.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I feel a bit frazzled today but I know once I get to class and get going, then catch up during office hours, I’ll do ok. Ash is out of town just overnight, doing some work stuff, so it’ll be me and the kids and even then, my oldest works tonight. I want to make something the kids like for dinner but I have a feeling it’s just going to be a Publix deli chicken night.

I can’t wait until tomorrow though, so I can be home in the quiet, catching up, maybe even cleaning up. I felt terribly unmotivated Tuesday, though I did get some stuff done, mainly registering my daughter for summer camp. I always forget we have to do it in March, which seems so early. Anyway, off to get ready for a day of teaching. Happy Wednesday!

  1. I never really eat asparagus but I feel like I want to try it cooked your way.
I used to get car sick and it was awful, it was only as I got older I stopped feeling it as much.

  2. You are “lucky” that you like to eat healthy food! I wish that I liked more vegetables. I don’t like the fact that I like so few veggies. You are unlucky in having motion sickness. I am glad that’s not something that has impacted me (except those tea cup type rides at amusement parks :)) I hope your interview went well!

  3. That’s interesting that you forgot about St. Patrick’s Day. You were very busy. Question #2 was not an easy answer. Interesting answer for #3. Sorry that you get car sick. It was so much fun as a kid playing outside. Glad to hear that you get outside a lot now. Enjoy your day tomorrow.

  4. I don’t have an air fryer, but your asparagus looks yummy! There are a lot of strong feelings about veggies in the HP today lol. My hubs and I both eat almost everything and I forget people are sometimes picky. My girls pretty much eat everything too so meals were always pretty easy. Have a great rest of the week!
