- Indeed, we have a block schedule today and I only meet with periods 1-3. Since I teach English and they test in that class and math, I have to be “on” basically all day. Though, fair to say, they test and I just… sit. There’s no good way to cheat on a standardized test anyway.
- But I can catch up on a good many other things I need to get done, which is nice.
- I went to bed “early” last night, since Ash wasn’t here. I figured I’d read from about 9:30 to ten then fall asleep. Sadly, I couldn’t sleep and didn’t until maybe 11. So when that 5 am alarm went off, I definitely reset it for 5:45.
- I just walked into the faculty lounge and while yes, it’s nice that admin gets us donuts because it’s testing day, that is Satan’s work! Get those carbs away from me! Luckily I am getting better at my self-control. Sure, I’d love a good glazed donut but it’s really a waste.
- Even though we had a nice weekend away, I am in need of a break. The kind where I don’t still have mental tasks weighing on me, such as impending grading and planning. I need to sit on a beach somewhere with a cold beer, good music, and nothing pressing.
- I don’t think that’s going to happen any time soon, though I will see the water in late April when we go to the St. George Island beerfest. While we are not staying on the beach, a friend of ours has invited us to have dinner at his father’s beach house after.
- I did something for each kid yesterday, in Ash’s absence. For one, I made my crockpot meatballs and mashed potatoes, since they love that. Then I played frisbee with my daughter, helped my oldest make food he hadn’t cooked before (asparagus), then started watching a movie with my middle. We began Casino Royale, and I remember now how hot Daniel Craig was in that. Hoo, boy.
- Do you ever randomly remember a place from your childhood? I suddenly got a memory of this condo that a cousin of my grandmother’s had in St. Augustine. We went to visit her once and I got to stay in this small slice of a room, which was sort of triangularly shaped, with a twin bed and and a large window, but no outlets and hence, no lights. So once the sun set over the Atlantic, the room was very dark and I remember being afraid.
- So we had a mystery on Saturday. We’d gotten an amazon package Friday evening but I forgot about it and then got another box Saturday morning. I went out to retrieve both and found a mens bifold wallet sort of stashed behind the white amazon envelop leaning against the side of my house by the door. At first I thought it may have been my son’s and he left it at a friend’s so it got returned. But once I looked inside, it was definitely not. It belonged to a black man who lived nowhere near me. The wallet contained: no money, an ID card not a license, his social security card, a ton of chime and paypal gift cards, some kind of card to a local medical clinic, and a business card from an addiction specialist with a little uplifting quote on it. Even curiouser is the fact that we have a camera on that exact porch area and all clips I viewed show no trace of that being put there. I assumed it was a delivery driver who did it. Maybe they found it by the street, especially since it was pouring rain most of Friday and the wallet was soaked. I don’t know!
- I called the non-emergency police line but couldn’t get anyone unless I was a. having a 911 emergency, b. needed a cop to respond to my home, or c. having a mental crisis. So I decided I’d just take it to the UPS store and mail it back to him anonymously. I do hope he gets it back… and that it didn’t end up at my home because he’s casing the joint!
- Anyway, this day has been very long so far and I am bleary-eyed and tired. A little less than two hours left at work and my plan is to nap before dinner!
Test day- NICE! I subbed and man, was it ever not test day!! I mean it was busy work for the students but we did reading together and I had to read some to each class. My voice is hoarse as I am not used to talking that much. It was nice of you to take the wallet to the UPS store and pay to mail it. How strange to think how it got there. I’ve been awake since 3:00 am but sadly, I can’t fall asleep easily and I’ll just plan to go to bed early tonight. I hope you can nap…
