Hello Monday – New pathways

To be honest, I didn’t do a whole lot of anything this weekend! Starting about midday Thursday, my husband was sick. I was getting over a slight illness myself by that day but he had just begun.

So yes, he didn’t do much that day and I was grading papers and catching up on stuff. Then Friday, I had things with my new job all day! I drove across town (this school is kinda far) and we began in the chapel (hadn’t been to church in a while, sad to say) and then the morning was slated to be some talks with a guy who is involved in the FSU student ministry stuff. He also runs an Instagram called It’s OK to be Catholic. I had never encountered it but he was a cool guy and said a lot of things pertinent to teaching there. They catered breakfast and lunch that day, which was nice, because the day felt overwhelming.

After lunch were staff and faculty introductions and then getting keys and laptops, and most importantly: schedule. I cannot say I am upset, though I am teaching four preps but one is honors. So, 10th and 11th English, one 11th Honors, and apparently, Journalism. The principal was handing out assignments and was like, “Are you comfortable with Journalism?” I mean, sure? I guess? We’ll see!

I will say, the really good thing is that I teach four in a row, then get lunch, then one more class and my last two periods are planning. This is great for me because after a certain time of the day, I sort of peter out. My brain doesn’t work as well. So yeah, I am trying not to feel super overwhelmed but it may be impossible for a little while.

After that stuff Friday, my brain was fried. I am sure we watched movies, because Ash didn’t feel like doing anything. And that was about it. Saturday morning was nice because everyone slept in. I was up early and I got to decompress with some youtube videos and twitch games and then somewhere between 9-10, I went out and ran a mile! I have not run in so long, due to cycling. It felt good to get back out there and I felt good doing it, though my legs hurt today! I ran again Sunday morning with my neighbor. She’s in her 60s and was complaining that she didn’t have the motivation to run as often so I told her we could run together. She held up really well! She is in good shape already so that helps.

After my run on Saturday, I took my daughter out clothes shopping, which is always exhausting because she loves it and tries on a ton of stuff. In the afternoon, Ash and I just watched movies. Elliot’s girlfriend came over for a while and that was about it.

Sunday, as noted, I ran, then I did laundry and Ash was feeling a lot better. Around 1, we took Dakota out for her birthday; 12! Her choice this year was Outback but sadly, we did not have the best experience. They apparently ran out of bread and our food took forever to get. It was sad but she at least enjoyed the food itself. The birthday was sort of low key this year. The clothes were her gift from me and then it rained on Sunday so she couldn’t swim. Her real party will be later this month on a free weekend.

So today is a full day of school prep. I have to be there from 8-3:30 and the agenda calls for some more relevant talks and whatnot. I am bringing my laptop though so during little breaks I can catch up on work. I am sure people will think I am some kind of loner, not chatting during those times but hey, I have stuff I am working on! Anyway, hope everyone has a great day; I’m off to get ready!

  1. They ran out of bread at Outback?? How sad to eat there without the bread! I hope your daughter had a great birthday. Your school schedule does sound nice. Two planning periods is wonderful and yes, a great time to have them. In our district, teachers get one and they are guaranteed that (they can HAVE to cover a class during their plan if there aren’t enough subs but they get compensated if they cover). I hope all goes well today!

  2. Wow! Your job sounds so exciting and your schedule seems ideal. I bet that will be a great set up for you. Glad you are both feeling better 🙂

  3. Your teaching schedule does sound pretty ideal. My brain also gets mushy in the afternoon. Exciting to start a new job!

I used to enjoy back-to-school clothes shopping with my kids, but they’re all boys, so it was pretty easy. I dread shopping for myself for some reason.

  4. I’d prefer to have the heavier teaching in the morning and planning afternoons too. I will say the beginning of a new school year is a tad overwhelming for even the returning teachers, and will be especially so for the newbies. You’ll figure out a rhythm and I hope you enjoy it. It’s kind of exciting to be doing something new too. Hope everyone is on the mend and starts the new year healthy!
