Random Tuesday – It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood

  • Weather has been nice the last two days and no complaints! I am trying to focus on the little things instead of stressing. It seems to be working.
  • I don’t know about y’all’s school system but here, they do EOC (end of course testing) aka finals, and when they do, every day is ONE test, so the other classes do literally nothing. In my day, teachers at least rolled out a movie or something but no, these teachers phone it in entirely and tell kids not to bother coming. I am OVER IT.
  • This is all to say my middle is home today and my husband let him on the condition he does stuff around the house. Which of course, he does. My oldest would scoff at the trade off.
  • SO, I had applied for an advisor position for Spring, but I didn’t get picked so the main guy told me I was still in the running for summer, but I had to reapply. I went in to look at the position and saw that the English department is seemingly hiring a position that is almost identical to what I did before. Pay is trash but I might could angle for more if they hire me. So I applied, wrote a specified cover letter, AND reached out to the current department chair, who is a professor I know and – I think – liked me. This gives me so much hope! Trying not to be cynical about it but my heart is a little lighter thinking I could go back there and work. Wish me luck!
  • I can barely put another bullet point down, I am working on so much. Between feeling elated with the prospect of going back to FSU and grading papers, and talking to my son, I am here, there, and everywhere! I keep thinking about a comforting moment between my husband and I the other day when I was feeling down about the job lull. He said to me, “It’s not the end of the world. You’ll be back in no time. Just be patient.” And he’s right. We get so caught up catastrophizing everything that we want to do something now, like that is going to be productive. All we can do is look for the opportunities that present themselves and take it one step at a time.
  • Speaking of, my son may have an in at the pool company we have. When he graduates, he’s going to call the manager because my friend there said they might be able to hire under 18 as a part time assistant then hire full time when he is 18. It would sure beat washing dishes!
  • OK, I’m going to finish grading these papers, then take my middle for a quick driving lesson, then get on the bike!

  1. The prospective job sounds promising! I’m with your husband, it’ll all work out fine.

Years ago, I was tutoring a high schooler in Florida, and I remember her stressing about her math EOC – a term I’d never heard before. So the kids who show up for the do-nothing classes do… nothing?
