A to Z Challenge – Day 21

U is for unknown

I think people often see “unknown” and paint it in a very negative light. ‘I’m scared of the unknown’. But what if you looked at it the way people tend to positively say, “You never know!” That would be something else, right?

I think the unknown is terrifying because it could be awful but for me, this is the first word that popped into my head and I was thinking how awesome the unknown could be. I look at it as little things that happen that are cool, profound, thought-provoking, or even fun. For example, the other day, I didn’t know I’d see a hawk in my neighbor’s front yard, his gnarled talon gripping the throat of a dead squirrel, laid out in front of him. He looked proud; like a trophy huntsman with his foot atop his kill. This hawk looked me square in the eye as I passed and I gave him a wide berth; ok buddy, that one’s yours. There’s something really cool about being stared down by nature. I remember one of my favorite authors, Bailey White, wrote about that and it struck me and stayed with me a long time.

But other things can be unknown too, that shouldn’t be feared. Good neighbors randomly invite you over and you have drinks and laugh until way too late. Your normally irritated child comes downstairs and gives you a random hug. These are the unknowns I like to live for and I am ever so thankful that life tends to throw them at me with a little more frequency than the ‘bad’ ones.

  1. I love this perspective and appreciate that you focused on the small unknowns. I think we fear what we don’t know or can’t predict, it’s a survival mechanism. But so many unknowns are not life-changing, simply opportunities to see/do new things, if only we’re open to the change in front of us! Thank you 🙂

  2. A very good perspective on the unknowns! I have been very pleasantly surprised by some of the exact same examples you’ve given. Like would be boring if every day was the same!!

  3. “Life”- I saw the mistake right as I hit the button and couldn’t do anything about stopping the comment to proceed as it was written, incorrectly!

  4. I liked your perspective. You’re right in that the word holds some trepidation, but it needn’t be so. We have a hawk who lives in one of our tall trees and I love watching him. He is usually scouting the property and water for a snack. One of my favorite birds. We also have something called a harrier hawk, which when it flies resembles a duck in flight and is sometimes mistaken for one. They fly very low unlike the red tails which soar. They’re cool too. Have a great day!

  5. I think that’s a great perspective. Imagine how different things might be if we decided to approach the unknowns as invitations into wonderful new possibilities?
