A to Z Challenge – Day 17

Q is for Quiet

Piggybacking off my P word, parties, I do need quiet after a lot of activity. If we throw a party, I need to sit in my chair and not do anything. When I am home here, alone, grading papers and whatnot, I tend to listen to music but once the playlist stops, I am totally fine with the silence. I am not a loud person by nature and even though I play my music in my headphones LOUD, I hate when people are shouting or have loud voices.

I like when we go somewhere and all you can hear are the quiet sounds of nature, the wind blowing, a cricket chirping. I don’t mind a distant hum of traffic but it’s nice to be somewhere without it. When I was younger, we’d go to this farmhouse out in Western New York, far from any cities. I remember feeling irked by the quiet but I think now, I’d really appreciate it.

  1. I like quiet quite a bit, too. I’m a pretty quiet person by nature and I enjoy the quiet (literally!). Though, like you, I do like nature sounds. We bought an outdoor fountain for our patio. I was worried that I may not like the “fake” aspect of the water feature (I mean it’s really water but it’s a fake waterfall) but fortunately, it sounds like nature to me and I love it!

  2. The older I get, the more I am impacted (negatively) by large crowds and a lot of noise. I love the sounds of nature and often listen to wave/surf sounds to go to sleep. I bought a bluetooth speaker to play music in the living room while I’m on the laptop but find I rarely use it. I don’t mind the quiet at all.
