Thursday 13 – Winter doldrums

  1. The other (cold) day, I was looking dolefully out the window then looked down at my aloe, which I brought inside and had placed in a sunny area. To my surprise, there was a lizard sunning on a stalk. I made sure when I brought those in that they were creature-free but there he was. I slowly moved the potted plant to the deck and he eyed me the whole time, but allowed it. He then resumed his sunbath and I was jealous. I went back to working.
  2. As we head into next week, it seems there’s another winter storm coming and even we in North Florida are not going to escape winter precipitation, be it freezing rain, sleet, hail or snow.
  3. I’m going to try not think ahead too much on that because I’ll be cold and sour and not real happy. But that’s still all just a state of mind.
  4. Darkhorse podcast was talking about the large areas of LA that are no more and will need to be rebuilt. They brought up this odd idea about a person’s sense of place and how some don’t have it; they have no affinity for where they come from or even where they currently live. As Heather and Bret discussed this longing for a place you knew when X happened or whatnot, I realized I have always had this sense. My childhood home is not entirely the same and each time I visit it looks foreign but still, I am transported to another place in my mind when I see it.
  5. The same is true about my high school home, though I only lived there 3 years. I visited in the years after college but it stopped feeling like home. Even my two oldest children knew it and it was nice for them to see where I learned to drive, made friends, and figured out life in general.
  6. I have to take my car in today for a power steering pump issue and the only way back is to walk. I could run but I’m not feeling that so I’ll get all dressed and walk the almost 2 miles home. It’ll be a good way to begin the day. Come home and get some grading done.
  7. Since I went back to working mostly from home, I stopped carting my stuff up to the closet in our room and just sat at the dining room table. Well, that room is pretty chilly so I’ve now moved to the bartops we put behind the couch in the living room. It’s right by an air vent so it’s a lot more comfy!
  8. OK, I walked my 2 miles and it wasn’t even that bad. It’s about 41 and sunny. Morning sun is supposedly the best for you so there’s that.
  9. I fear it may be a long day; no car, hungry, waiting until everyone gets home to contemplate dinner. Is it crazy I’m already thinking about food next Wednesday? My oldest said we need to get sushi soon and next week, we have an opportunity to steal away and get some. We’re the only two who like it and it’s always a nice little mother/son outing to eat it.
  10. I’m putting off grading certain things but I don’t know why; there’s no reason to and if I don’t do it today, I will have to tomorrow and I want to work on house projects then: new handles for the kids’ bathroom shower, painting, etc.
  11. I feel like I used to have a lot more profound thoughts when I was in my 30s. Now, I feel like I’m just surviving, every now and then having some insightfulness about life and people and the world. Is that weird? Is it just me?
  12. Perhaps it’s just because I feel so busy BUT, how was I not simply busier when the kids were littler? It was a different kind of grind, I guess.
  13. OK, time to buckle down on this here grading; I’ll feel a lot better once I get it done and out of the way!

  1. We used to have a condo down there in Casselberry and I bought a lizard in on a lounge chair once. He never moved apparently and same deal — when I finally saw him, just moved the chair back outside. Nice he wasn’t running all over my condo!

  2. A very different kind of grind, that’s for sure, when kids were little! A two mile walk outside on a cool, sunshiny sounds nice. I walked/ran for an hour on the treadmill earlier- it felt good to move for that long. I’d have rather done it outside but our sidewalks are still covered in snow. I hope you got your grading done or at least started :).
