Wednesday ‘Podge – Finding serenity

1. What’s something you think is under appreciated. Explain.

I don’t think we appreciate slowing down and observing the world enough. My students are writing an analysis paper and so many of them picked aspects of social media and phone usage, which tells me even they see it. I said to a student yesterday that no one knows how to sit in a space and just…be.

2. As winter approaches how do you stay productive?

It’s funny this comes up because even though we don’t get winter with snow and all that, as these last few months happen, I tend to be really unmotivated. My husband was just saying the same thing but of course he doesn’t think it’s weather or season-related. I just try to make lists and as I cross items off, let those little wins propel me forward.

3. What’s a popular food you don’t like?

I couldn’t think of one specific FOOD but I thought of a place: Moe’s. I think their Mexican bowl is trash. I LOVE Chipotle’s – the flavors are just superior. But I have tried Moe’s exact same thing so many times and it is so bland.

4. What do you think is more interesting-art or history? Elaborate.

Hmm, both are, to me, but maybe history simply because from the things we read about in said history came the art. So that was the chicken and the art is the egg.

5. What advice would you give to someone half your age?

Be aware of how much time you’re wasting. Sometimes it’s ok to waste a little but don’t do it too much. Also, don’t run from your problems. They’re always still there.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I had a moment yesterday where I began panicking about Spring term. As in every year past, class enrollment is always lower so Spring is a term with less money. I let this one get away from me and now I’m wondering if I should just apply for regular old jobs again. I mean, TSC could give me 3 sections and I’d be just fine (I lucked out on a 4th this term, which means I saved a lot) but still, summer is really bad so I have to do something regardless. I knew this going in, of course, but it’s time for the rubber to hit the road and get on with it. It’s interesting though because I talked to the associate dean last week and I said to her, “real talk; will there be a decent # of Spring courses?” and she replied that she thought, yes. Then the email yesterday made sure to tell all us adjuncts that she’d do her best but you never know. Which is true; some kids don’t register until the very last minute. But oh, the waiting and unknown!

I am going to get a lot done today and hopefully feel ahead. I am constantly feeling behind and that’s no good for my psyche at all. This number of courses I am teaching is probably too many but it is what I need to make ends meet so here we are.

I am, however, going to attempt to take a quick run today. I’ve let it fall by the wayside with all this work, my husband out of town, and all the biking we’ve been doing. But I miss running and need it in my life!

  1. I completely agree about people, sadly not just young people, are unable to sit without scrolling, checking messages, etc. I’m sure I’m guilty of it at times too. It’s an easy habit to fall in to and a tough habit to break. And of course everything is online, an app, you can’t get away from it. I don’t want any more apps but sometimes you have to download one in order to access what you need. I guess its the way forward but I’m rebelling a little lol.

    1. Agreed; too many apps that do specific things so you HAVE to have them. And yes, I too am trying to avoid looking at my phone if I don’t have to but they sure do make it easy.

  2. I have only been to Moe´s once or twice. Isn´t that the place that gives free chips and salsa? I do like that about them. Agree with everything you said about advice and things that are underappreciated. I hope you get your run in!

  3. I haven’t eaten at Moe’s or Chipotle lately – both sound good :-). According to my American History class this semester, art CAN BE a primary source of historical events. We’ve analyzed some art work for political/event cues of the time. It has been interesting!

  4. I teach 6th and 8th grade, and they don’t know how to sit and just be still. I am guilty of scrolling through my phone when I get home and definitely need to break this habit.

  5. Having a list to work on helps keep me motivated and focused. Or at least I like to think so. I do struggle with my motivation a lot more in the winter. Great advice for younger people! Hope you’re getting everything done that you’d planned on and are having a great week!
