Wednesday ‘Podge – Joy in simplicity

1. June 12 is National Simplicity Day. In what way is your life simple? What’s one way that it’s not?

LOL it is not at all simple! There are, I suppose, moments in my life that I create to be simple. Things like a walk in the evening or sitting by the pool on a weekend… only after all work has been completed. One way it is not simple is because I have children. Having to be on top of all their various needs, etc is always chaotic. For example, tomorrow is Duo Day at camp and the kids wanted to be m&ms so I printed the letter m and I am going to paint it onto red and blue shirts, respectively. Sigh.

2. Something you remember from a ‘simpler time’?

Well, we can all relate to that childhood feeling of not being in charge of anything; just being free to do whatever you want, especially in summer. But even 10 years ago was simpler, in terms of the way this world was. I kind of miss when we didn’t talk about or make everything about politics.

3. Do you like squash? If so what’s your favorite variety? What’s a favorite way to prepare squash?

I do. I don’t know if I can recall all the types; butternut is good roasted in the oven with butter and cinnamon. I prefer yellow. Sometimes I just sauté it with zucchini. I like my mom’s where she sautés it with onions.

4. Do you shop the warehouse stores (such as Costco, Sam’s B.J’s, etc)? If so how often do you go, and what’s something you always buy in this type of store?

I am a member at Costco and I wouldn’t say I go often; maybe once a month. I am not even a large buyer but we always buy their paper products, large boxes of granola bars, Rao’s spaghetti sauce, and a lot of times, their prime steaks. Sometimes they get big boxes of Warsteiner beer in too and we stock up.

5. Father’s Day is this coming Sunday. Any plans to make the day special? Tell us something about your own father, or something about your hubs as a father, or about someone who stepped into your life and acted as a father if yours was not a part of your life.

I think we decided I would just make his favorite meal: roasted turkey, mac and cheese, cornbread, green beans, and mashed potatoes.

My dad is a complicated history for me but only because of my childish perspective. I see now why he was stressed and angry a lot. But he really is a good guy who watched out for us and taught me a lot. He’s a lot more calm now, which I like.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Since Ash is out of town when Brew Club happens this month, I have to run it. Sure, I’ll have our VP and Treasurer there to help but it’s mostly on me to get all the PowerPoint slides together and bring almost all the equipment. In some ways I take pride in trying to do it in his absence. Normally I help but he, as president, mostly runs it.

That on top of everything else going on this week, I have a very long list. But as we discussed last week when asked our summer mantra, I actually have gotten really good at following mine: One day at a time. While my list is long, I am not actively thinking beyond today (Tuesday as of this writing). I have to leave by 3:30, start the meatballs in the crockpot, then go back and get the kids from camp. Then later in the evening, Dakota and I might go to Target. One month ago I bought her bathing suits and they are already too small! She must have just grown. I also need to do some tidying around the house and putting things away. You know how that goes: items end up on surfaces where they don’t belong and you have to go around and put them all back.

I did indeed do what I planned yesterday. Got home and started the sprinkler, got the meatballs going, did a load of laundry. Picked up kids and made the sides and fed them. Then Koda and I acquired a new bathing suit and the various other things we needed. When I got home, I relaxed! Today I have to again swing into the store then my goal tonight is to finalize the slides for Brew Club and paint the camp shirts. I feel like this week is going so fast!

  1. Absolutely agree with everything being about politics, and pick your side. Ugh! Sounds like you’re on top of things and one day at a time is working for you. I never think about making turkey this time of year, but I love it and it’s actually an easy main dish to make. Plus the house smells good! Enjoy the rest of your week!

    1. My husband loves Thanksgiving so we always make that meal around Father’s day/his birthday but yeah, it’s not ever something I would have made in summer!

  2. Good luck with running the Brew Club without your husband. You got this! I do know the feeling of pride of getting things done in your husband´s absence that he would normally do. I am preparing a turkey as well for Father´s Day- not because it is his favorite (though he likes it a lot!) but because I want to use the turkey that I have and I know it will make lots of leftovers (also making a ham!) that my son can take back to his place with him.

  3. I think a lot of people feel nostalgic for “the old days” because, as kids, life was simple from our point of view at the time. Some of my peers think “life was so much better in the 70s”, and I’m thinking rampant acceptance of racism and mysogyny, secondhand cigarette smoke everywhere, etc. lol. But yeah, I could do with out all the political banter, cyberbullying, and “influencers” of today.

Your dad and your relationship with him sounds a lot like my world.

  4. One day at a time is such a good mantra!! A friend once told me that when a day is too much, it can be one hour at a time or even one moment at a time! It sounds like you are accomplishing a lot of things!!

  5. You sound organized and ready to go for Brew Club! You are so right that it’s hard to get to simple living with kids these days. I’m sure your husband will be pleased with his favorites for the Father’s Day meal.

  6. *drooling at the thought of those meatballs* This would be about food the day I skipped breakfast. *sigh*

You are organized. Well done. I was organized like that when I was working. Now I have a kinda “whatever” attitude. At least I’m not stressed or overly concerned anymore.

The Brew Club sounds like fun. Do y’all try different craft beers? There’s a restaurant in Boerne, Texas that sells craft beers. I’ll bet there’s a hundred or more different choices. It’s called The Dodging Duck. They had some of the most interesting tasting beers. I wish we had something like that here in SE Georgia.

Stay cool! It’s blazing and dry here. 💙

    1. OK so yes, we do sample different beers but we are the homebrew club so we talk about brewing and sample others’ homebrew. Where in GA are you? I know the Casual Pint has multiple locations.

  7. The roast turkey dinner sounds really good! I am glad things are better with you and your dad. I think that as we become parents. we understand things more about what our parents had to deal with. I agree with you about politics. I never did like it and I try to limit my time watching news. Enjoy your weekend!
