Gather your camels – it’s humpday

It’s weird but the coffee actually worked this morning… maybe a little too well. I am sort of fidgety now and there’s not actually anything to do. I did have to trek across campus to cancel a class so that was a good little jaunt. It’s cold out but not as frigid as yesterday. But come Friday, oh Friday, how it will be freezing.

I was listening to my ipod as I walked – tuning out the world. For being so connected (wired, wireless, music, movies, media) we are incredible disconnected to the world around us. We purposely block out the sounds of nature, shove our hands in our hoodie pockets and shuffle about the sidewalks without making eye contact with anyone. It is rare to see a student who is neither listening to an mp3 player nor talking on a cellphone. We are all in our own little worlds.

I was listening to the Killers – no, I have not gotten their new album yet – and I was taking notice of the lyrics. For some reason, I was thinking about how they hit me:

And someone is calling my name
From the back of the restaurant
And someone is playing a game
In the house that I grew up in
And someone will drive her around
Down the same streets that I did
On the same streets that I did

I just really like that. Simple yet poignant. And he has a voice that affects me so.

I have to mail a package at lunch and I should do some other shopping but I am poor until Friday (is 106 bucks in the bank considered poor??) Tonight, we’re going to dinner for one of our friend’s birthday. He is going to be 28 – he just beats me. Well, technically, our friend, Steve, will be 28 just before me. And then it’s me and I’ll be old.

Have a good Wednesday, people.

  1. I know what you mean about being disconnected from the world. I wander around campus and ride the bus with my iPod, and 75% of everyone I see around me has either an iPod or a phone stuck to their ears. . . or are text messaging. I wonder if it’s good for us. . .

  2. Well, of course it’s not GOOD for us, but the truth is, it’s not going to change anytime soon. We’re too far buried into the “digital revolution” to turn back now.
