Not feeling my best today but I blame the Chinese food we had last night for dinner. Oh well; onto the recap. Friday afternoon I thought would feel like a very long time because I chose to stay at work a little later so I could meet up with a friend of mine. She’s the one whose husband had just gone through brain cancer treatment. We were supposed to walk last Monday but it was raining so we made a plan to meet up Friday because her daughter’s softball team was playing my school’s. She got there a little earlier than I thought she would so we got to talk for longer. I left at 5:00 to battle rush hour traffic, which seem particularly bad, but it was just due to a dead car in the middle of an intersection. It was actually not as bad as I thought it would have been, but this is a government worker town and everybody knocks off early on Fridays. I got home with about enough time to sit for 20 minutes and then get dressed, because we had been invited to a special dinner for a friend of ours. We went up there a little before 6:30 and mingled with a few of the people she invited, which were mostly family, the few coworkers she employs at her audiology place, and a couple of her old friends. The place we went to was pretty nice. It’s supposed to be French but I’m not sure how French it was. Ash and I split a steak and a really good mac and cheese. We got home right at 9:00 and it worked out that Dakota’s friend’s mom could bring her home from the band thing at school because I wasn’t sure we’d be able to.
That evening I did a check-in with one of our Homebrew club members who runs events like the one we were holding Saturday, because he had said he wasn’t sure if he was going to make it. Since I hadn’t heard from him, I asked and lo and behold, he was bailing. This meant that I had to figure out how to pull this thing off. We used to be the ones running these so it wasn’t the most difficult, but it was kind of annoying because if it’s your responsibility you either make it happen or you get with people and ask how you can facilitate making it happen. I pulled it all together though and around 9:30 am, we left to go pick up the Boston butt that a friend of ours had made for the event, then went on to the house where it was being hosted. We only had six entries for this in-club comp, which is not too bad. We’ve had as many as 11-13, depending on style. But that’s ok; it was still cool. Ash wrote a program so you could vote on your phone instead of on paper and that worked really well. With the exception of our host’s, all the porter came out pretty well; I’m proud of our club. Ash and I got first, which feels like retribution. We took it to another club’s tasting/comp and it had diacetyl (that buttered popcorn off flavor) and we were convinced someone who poured it screwed up and mixed it with someone else’s. It did not present as having that this time!
Zoom in to see the cool awards I made for this one. We now have two firsts, a second, and a third for in-club comps, as well as a gold for sanctioned events. Very exciting! Saturday was a very long day and when we got home, I was really to just chill.
Sunday I woke up and took a run first thing, then picked my daughter up from a sleepover and took her and her friend to Target. I didn’t need much but I hadn’t been in a while. I cleaned my bathroom and got laundry going. After making chicken alfredo for lunch, Ash and I watched both Monster Squad from 1987 and then Welcome to the Dollhouse, which I’d seen but not since high school. It was a pretty relaxing day all in all. We bowled a little, I ordered some Chinese food for dinner, and we went to bed kind of early!
I have one million things to do this week and was surprised to see there’s still three weeks left in April; for some reason it feels like we’ve been in this month a long time already. I definitely need to spend some time catching up on junk but I can never seem to get ahead!
