A to Z challenge – F is for (U)Fleku

As noted in the sign up post, I decided to highlight beers I have liked. I know this sounds very surface but a lot of my personal life/hobbies revolve around it. We are homebrewers and I have – as of today – 4,570 unique check-ins on the app, Untappd. I keep track of all beers and rate them there. So, without further ado – F!

Technically, the name of this beer is Flekovsky tmavy lezak 13°. Missing the Czech accents of course but suffice to say this is a Dark Czech lager we had on the first day we arrived in Prague on our European vacation last Fall. We had to wait on our airbnb host, an American dude who insisted on meeting us in person and showing us the ropes. Funny thing is that after we went to the uFleku biergraden, he told us it was a known tourist trap. Yeah well, it was fantastic! Below pic is not mine but you get the gist. The one I refer to can be seen on the left of the goulash, which was also good when we had it. We had goulash about 6 times while there and I acn tell you it is nothing like what America thinks is goulash.

I love a dark lager and this was – by far – the very best I have ever had. Debatable about its true rating; I gave it a 4.25 and Ash gave it a 4.5. In our rating system, it is TOUGH to get that high of a score. Now, to be absolutely fair, sometimes I am too nice to a beer if I have already had a couple. This was my very first beer of the day, since we’d taken the train from Plzen into Prague that morning. It was dark and rich, malty but not too heavy. While I have had some dark lagers at home that rival it, this will remain in the top spot for a while to come, I can tell.

We have a dark Czech lagering right now; my initial taste was good, though in time, it’ll improve. I’m excited to drink my own but this one is still ranked #1 in my book.
