Thursday 13 – One day at a time

  1. I see the value in waking up early, but 3:45 is a wee TOO early. My daughter had to be to the school this morning for her 7th grade field trip. I took the early shift and I’ll leave the midnight pickup to my husband!
  2. There is something peaceful about driving through the sleepy neighborhood at such a young hour of the day. It reminds me of all the days I worked from home – before and during Covid times – and I mourn the loss of the easier, slower hours.
  3. But on that note, I have a half day today. Teaching at a Catholic school certainly comes with its challenges but some advantages – Easter/Holy Week being one of them. So we only go until 12 today; 25 min classes and stations of the cross before dismissal.
  4. I need to go to Costco when I leave today, which is a task I vehemently hate. Maybe it won’t be too crowded at that time though. But I think, given all the things happening in our world, it’s time to stockpile stuff like shampoo, etc. Sadly, we don’t eat a lot of pantry foods anymore so fresh stuff will still be needed, no matter how high the prices get.
  5. Speaking of, I pulled in to get gas on Monday and while the sign said 4.15, it was only 3.75. I got bailed out I think! How high are gas prices where you are? My oldest, who drives, is complaining about it and we reminded him that during the 8 years Obama was president, these prices were the norm!
  6. We have started weaving running into our nightly walks; last night we did 4 miles – half mile run, half mile walk, etc. It hasn’t been too tough getting back to it but I am not doing well in the sciatic nerve area. I am constantly stretching and mitigating that nagging ache that runs from my hips to my ankles. It’s not the same “getting back to running” pain though and all I can say is … perimenopause! Of course.
  7. I was having a ton of hot flashes back in maybe October/November and then I read how sea kelp iodine can help. I wove that into my daily vitamins and it helped. But lately, they’ve come back and not even the supplements help.
  8. Oh, and I’ve been having this weird thing where, just before I wake up, I imagine I smell someone cooking. The other night, after dozing off in my chair, I woke up and asked if my son had come home because I smelled him making dinner. But my husband said he hadn’t yet! This morning, I woke up and thought I smelled toast, which made sense, since my daughter was up before me. But she was not even downstairs yet! Apparently this too is a perimenopause symptom. I guess the only good thing is that it solidifies that yes, this is happening to me.
  9. This week saw me begin my Speculative/Dystopian fiction unit at school. We (being the teachers who tackle 10th grade) had originally planned to read 1984 this quarter but we shifted gears and created a unit that has us reading short stories and pairing them with Twilight Zone episodes, and then we begin 1984 with 2 weeks left then let them finish it for summer reading. This is far preferable and I think they’re liking it so far.
  10. The pollening here began about two weeks ago and seems to have tapered a bit. I rinsed my car the other day and not too much has returned. However, my sinuses don’t believe it; they’re killing me! I always think it’s just Florida that does it to me but everywhere I have traveled has shown me that I have some kind of allergy no matter what.
  11. I’m hearing so much good stuff about Project Hail Mary; guess I will have to see it eventually here. I’m not a big Gosling fan but if it’s a good story, I’m in.
  12. We watched an old movie called Sorcerer last night and man, what a crazy ride! They gathered four criminals on the run to take nitroglycerine bombs safely through the wilds of some Latin America jungle. There is one bridge scene that is harrowing!
  13. OK time to start the day; we are just doing a vocab/PSAT prep sheet this morning so I should be able to catch up on other stuff while they work.
