Friday Five – Final day!

  1. I may have complained about my Secret Santa on here – can’t remember. But the gist was that we had 3 days of small gifts and one final gift today. On day one, the person had a student bring me something and she said the name of our Latin teacher. And the gifts were so hobo and crappy, I figured it actually made sense. I’m talking, junk the school gave us and had been beaten up in someone’s backpack. So all week I’ve been telling people about this, though quantifying that it is not about the receiving. I did the secret santa to give to someone.
  2. Anyway, I’m in my room Thursday morning, listening to music and preparing for the day, when the new young math teacher comes in and surprises me with some baskets filled with two kinds of cheeses, a face mask, card game, fuzzy socks, and a Nightmare Before Christmas Funko. Wow! I was blown away AND humbled, since I’d been bashing my so-called gift giver this week. It shows that in every thing you do, there is a lesson.
  3. Meanwhile, for the person I got, I tried really hard to get things she wanted, from the sheet we filled out. She specified dark chocolate so I went to World Market. She left a little note on the sheet that said “Merry Christmas, ya filthy animal” so I got her an ornament that said it. She said a hobby was coloring so I got her a fun coloring book. She checked the ‘yes – alcohol’ box so I got a red recommendation from my mom and she was so excited about all the gifts; it was heartwarming, really. I feel really welcome here in this new job.
  4. I have nothing to do today, since I’m done grading midterms. But I had to take Isaac to school so I was here early. Rules are fuzzy on this; if we don’t have to administer tests do we need to be here? We are contractually obligated but to what end, ya know? So I’m playing it all by ear. I’ll plan for next semester and do other work.
  5. We went to trivia last night (Christmas edition, of course) and got close twice but didn’t win, sadly. But there were A LOT of people there; more than normal. I think the word has gotten out that the guy who runs it is semi-famous, having been in Christmas Vacation. We’ve been going for years so it’s not news to us but some people probably just found out. I saw a couple groups taking pictures with him afterwards. Anyway, it was fun and I am glad we went. Tonight, no plans other than to decompress, then tomorrow, we have soccer and another party and whatnot. It’s busy but as I always say: if I wasn’t busy, what the heck would I be doing??

  1. What a great gift basket! And how nice of you to put a lot of thought into your gift. I am only giving one gift to a staff member today. I am an island at the school and only work mostly with one lady (plus I´m just a sub and not on staff anyway!). Trivia sounds like it was a lot of fun. How wonderful will this weekend feel- a nice long break in front of you :).
