Hello Monday

Look at me, doing a real blog post! I have been churning through my trip recap ones too and the next one will publish Tuesday. But for now, my weekend.

It was weird going back to work for only one day, but also kind of nice as a buffer/debriefing period with my students. It felt like a long day though. We’d let my middle stay home Friday (he has good grades for now) and one Ash got home they worked on the deck, which we are taking down due to it rotting away.

Got home and drank some beer, played our arcade bowling game, and fell asleep early! I am still not adjusted back to our normal times. In fact, I woke up at 5 or earlier every day since we’ve been back. No complaints though because it gave me quiet, alone time each morning.

Saturday it was just me and my coffee until probably 6, when Ash woke too. I was feeling really motivated and I did a quick pool vacuum, even before the sun was all the way up. It was just me, the angry squirrels, and our neighborhood owl out at that time. Isaac had work (refereeing for the city) at 8 so I took him and then Ash and I put the pool cover on. It is still getting up into the 80s but we’ve had weeks of nights in the 60s, making it all too cold to swim. Funny thing is, if it were warm enough, no one would. Once football starts and the Fall semester is in full swing, no one feels like it anymore.

We spent the morning doing house things, cleaning, etc. At noon, we had a birthday party for our friend’s one year old. That was kind of nice. We ate and watched little kids do what they do. We came home to nap and watch some movies, then FSU lose to Miami. Sigh.

Sunday morning I woke again early, but I got started on some other stuff and grading. Ash and I both ran – I had a fantastic run, considering I pulled something in my right leg on Saturday somehow – and then I made lunch, which was leftover pulled pork our Saturday hosts insisted on sending us home with, mac and cheese, green beans, and cornbread. So good!

Sadly, my stomach hurt for the rest of the day and I honestly thought I might be getting sick (which wouldn’t be surprising after a long international trip) but I seem ok today. Could just be readjusting to this area’s allergens. Watched football for most of the day, which was really nice. You can’t really pay attention to American sports when you are overseas; the time difference makes it way too difficult. It was so nice being back and doing these normal, mundane activities. Along with sleeping in my own bed, on my own pillow, the last couple days have been so nice.

Anyway, time to start teaching for the day. Tune in tomorrow for my next trip recap post; there will be one more probably Thursday then I want to mention all the differences we noticed between America and Europe!

  1. I can see how it would be nice to go back to school for a day and then have a break, lol! But seriously, I can see how the one day would be a good way of easing back and seeing your students again. The party sounds fun and how great to be sent home with food- it sounds like really good food, too. I will be curious to read your thoughts about how things are different over there and also how your parents/kids fared while you were gone (if you wish to share!!) Have a great Monday!

  2. Getting back in the groove after a big trip is tough. I think having one day of work was probably good as opposed to going all in with a full week. I’ve heard you need a day for every hour of time change to recover completely. It feels true.
