Wednesday ‘Podge – How is it September!?

Sorry I’m late; work and all.

1. Next Sunday is Grandparent’s Day. Share a favorite memory, photo, recipe, or something you learned from a grandparent.

I have so many but this one came up today because my 10th graders have to write a personal narrative and we’re focusing on writing details and slowing down action. I was going to relate how I remember my mom’s dad: puttering around in his garage. He had old cars, always, and a lot of bicycles he worked on. His benches always littered with pieces of wire, tools, things he was fixing up, radio parts, etc… Even when we came to visit, he’d steal away to the garage, turn on his old-timey radio stations (1940s) and work there. He was always so gracious, letting me talk, answering any question I had, and generally just letting me be present while he worked.

2. What’s a quote from a book (besides The Bible) that has stayed with you?

My classes are reading Fellowship of the Ring and it’s the one about how Frodo wished the ring had never come to him and Gandalf assures him that all folks wish then when it was something difficult and weighty but we must press on and do as we must. Really liked that.

3. What’s your number one food pet peeve?

OK so this one is partially food but the thing that first came to mind is when people let pets around food. Like if a person is hosting and has food out but their cat is walking on the counter. NO THANKS. That is disgusting.

4. What’s one thing about you that is still the same as it was when you were young?

Hmm, I am still very prone to saying NO as soon as someone asks me. I have gotten better but I resist first.

5. September is National Preparedness Month…does your family have an emergency plan? Do you have some sort of preparedness kit you keep on hand? If so, tell us one thing that’s kept there.

Ha, not really. We do have a generator and – typically – we fill 4 5-gallon gas tanks and if we don’t use them during hurricane season, we just put them in our cars. This year, we have not filled.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I am slowly getting the hang of teaching. I am sure there will be setbacks but for now, the school is becoming more familiar and I am settling into a good routine. I am, however, a tad sick – just a sinus infection. I am tired and my face hurts but I can press on. I have too much to do to take a day so I’ll do what I can and get it gone soon.

  1. The memory of your grandfather is sweet. One thing I’ve noticed in reading the grand parenting memories is that it’s really the simple everyday acts we remember, spending time with us, that’s what stays with us and I think makes us feel loved. Glad things are going well. Hope you feel better soon.

  2. What a wonderful memory of your grandfather, I think my girls will have the same memories of my dad. He is always puttering around in his garage and workshop.
Eww! I totally agree about pets being near food, it is a big no, no for me!
I hope you feel better soon.

  3. Aw, sweet Grandpa.

My cat will jump up on our table when we are eating, but not if we have visitors. It’s like he knows not to be so rude!
