Well, it’s week 2 of the school year and I am only slightly more confident in my high school teaching abilities. I see that I need to plan a lot more, that’s for sure. But overall, I am making it.
Friday, I was READY at 3:25 but my contract says we stay ’til 3:30. Well, I can tell you that as I walked out to that parking lot at 3:27, a lot of people had left. Duly noted! I headed to the store then home, where I made pizzas and cracked a beer. We played some bowling and listened to music and in general, decompressed.
Saturday I woke up and felt pretty motivated. I ran 2 miles, cleaned in the house, watched soccer, ran a couple errands, and we had Mexican for lunch. I made sure I felt good about the progress I’d made before moving onto movie watching. Dakota had a friend over to swim and Elliot’s girlfriend came over and they went to dinner. Later in the evening we ended up watching old home videos and she got to see what a fun and weird kid he’d been. LOL. I don’t think he was too embarrassed.
Sunday morning I got started right away on laundry and some other in-house tasks because again, I knew I’d want to knock off at some point and just…hang out. We had burgers for lunch then began watching some movies. I wish I had more exciting things to report but since this was the last truly free weekend for a long time, I wasn’t trying to add more on to it!

After your first week in a high school classroom, it sounds like you had the perfect low key weekend.
It’s funny- I think the union successfully fought for the teachers in our district to not have to stay a minute past the last bell. However, I know that support staff has to stay ten minutes past the last bell. The staff I know does wait until the ten minutes have passed- they literally have a timer on their phone and leave as soon as their phone hits the minute they can leave, lol. It sounds like a good, low key weekend! I’m glad you got to relax and spend time with your family. Have a great Monday!
Glad you had a low key weekend. These first few weeks are a grind but you’ll get there. And now I want to get out some home movies : )
One week down!
Ack, I remember working for the school district and that “contract time”. Didn’t work too well with my rebellious nature 🙂
