- Boy, Monday was A DAY. The AC hadn’t worked all night so it was warm. Ash went on to work and I took the kids to camp. It was hot in the house but I put a fan faced towards me and got started on calling AC companies. So I got with the folks who came out last time and he was out within an hour. Guy tells me the compressor is straight up broken and they can rebuild it or we can get a new unit. SO, we decide to try two other companies first. One recommended by Ash’s coworker and then the people who installed a new unit in our old house in 2013.
- I left and had lunch at the mall, then when I got back, had about an hour to work on grading and also, I had to make that phone call to my new potential employer to both accept the position and tell her about my Germany trip. She was fine with it! I mean, she sounded rather neutral; so long as I planned it out it was fine. She was actually more engaged and interested in why I’ll be gone next week – my Iowa ride. Anyway, that was all well and good and soon as I accepted, I got an email with first steps; paperwork, training, etc. And things kick off the 31st and it’ll be off to the races. I feel very overwhelmed but also, trying to take it one step at a time. I have not taught high school but I’ve been teaching college freshman for 21 years. I am sure I can adjust.
- The other AC guy showed up and got the unit running. Well, he was surprised the other guy didn’t try a few things and he explained any number of things it could have been that the guy did or did not do, but it’s working so – knock on wood – let’s hope it stays that way. I mean, we need a new one but I didn’t want to go making any major decisions right before we were fixing to leave! I tell ya; God watches out for you. He really does.
- Now I am trying to get some work done because in the next two days, I have to finalize things for our trip; pack; tidy the house; buy groceries; get all my grading for the week completed. At last I feel motivated!
- Last night we were supposed to see Superman but our theater closed! They’ve been having AC issues with certain theaters for probably 3 weeks but about an hour before our showing, we got an email saying it was temporarily closed. Hope that means it is getting fixed!
- Instead, we watched a movie from the 80s called Alien Nation, which wasn’t groundbreaking or anything but actually pretty decent.
- This week feels so weird because I have so much to do today and tomorrow then by Thursday afternoon/evening, we’ll be in Nashville. That’ll be day one of travel, then the next night we’ll be in Kansas City. Both of these places I have stayed, though KC most recently, last summer. The next day we’ll be in the start town in Iowa for check-in and Expo and all that; newbie meetings. Then on Sunday, we begin our ride!
- I have gotten really good at compartmentalizing; I think if I wasn’t, I would probably, as the kids say, have crashed out by now!
Yah! So glad your trip(s!) aren’t going to be a problem with your new job! I will be so curious what you think of teaching high school. Having taught college freshman, the age of your students won’t daunt you but I wonder what the high school vs. college difference will be like. Also the school being private and not public could throw an interesting dynamic into teaching (I would think it’s a good thing. I have a friend who taught high school English in a public school but positions were being cut and she got worried so she took a job teaching English at a private high school. She took a pay cut but she likes it at the private school considerably better than at the public school she was in). Also glad your AC is working- can’t imagine not having that in FL! Good luck getting everything done…
That was smart to get someone else out to check on your AC. So glad he could fix it!!
Congratulations on your new job!!!
Hope whatever the guy did keeps the AC running until fall at least for you. Our most recent AC unit is a Carrier…
