Hello Monday – New month, new outlook

I’m actually starting this recap Saturday, because we are brewing and it’s a long process and I’d usually be on my phone but…it died. A couple months ago, I was talking to my son while walking around the (then closed) pool, and I tripped on a spring holding down the cover and fell, breaking the bottom part of my phone’s screen. I lived with it a while but I do believe that when we got caught in the rain on Friday, that’s what did it.

So yes, Friday. I worked on things in the morning and Ash got home around 11 – he had a half day at work. We decided to ride outside and chose this route in our neighborhood that would get us to 20 miles if we did four loops. It was kind of rough, to be honest; pretty hilly too. At one point, he was pretty far ahead (road bike versus mountain) and he called to say to meet him at one turning point after my fourth loop and we’d go to El Jalisco. So we biked a few more total miles (3.2 more) so we could eat Mexican. On the way back, we got caught in a downpour; that was the nail in the coffin for my phone. Funny part is that it rained for maybe 5 minutes then cleared up. Sigh. Got home and showered and I tried to use my phone again but the screen went all wonky. I stuck it in a Tupperware of rice and lived through about a ten minute period of feeling withdrawal. And I realized that we do rely on our phones too much. I always say the kids need to put down the screens but I guess I am guilty of it too.

By this time, it was getting on 3 or 4, probably closer to 4. Elliot’s friend was over, swimming, then we decided to watch a movie. Ash was in for “something epic” so we landed on Gone With the Wind. Funny enough, he’d never seen it! It had been a while for me. You know, it definitely IS one of the best movies ever made. Quiet night, all in all.

I didn’t sleep well; think I got a little sunburned on the bike so I was hot. These days I have to ask myself, if I am tossing and turning a lot – is it drinking too late? is it sunburn? is it perimenopause? One never knows! So yeah, I woke up at my normal 6 am time Saturday. At least I have a tablet I can check in on things with. No texting, which I realize I count on for a great many things, especially with the kids. But Ash has his of course; they just rarely text him about stuff! I am the go-to parent. Elliot and his girlfriend went to the beach today too.

OK, so, after the above on Saturday, we finished our brew and I cleaned equipment, then we went to Costco to switch to ATT. We’d been wanting to for a while because Verizon around here has gotten pretty bad. Just slow. So we spent about 30-40 minutes with the guy at the kiosk and I think it’s going to work out. It was actually cheaper to get everyone – minus Ash who has a brand new phone – a new device. So those are on their way. When we got back from all that, I put my sim card into Ash’s really old phone just so I could be back in the land of communication. I survived about 24 hours without a phone! It didn’t matter much, to be honest. I had other people who could text, obviously.

I know that evening we watched movies but honestly? I cannot remember. I was really tired. OH, I know. Isaac had a couple friends over to spend the night. We don’t usually opt for that but he wore us down. And since my daughter isn’t here, it was slightly less chaotic. So they were knocking around the house, swimming, etc… I know I fell asleep pretty early. At least the boys were quiet enough.

The next morning, I woke up at my normal 6 am time again, which worked out because we’d planned to get our 40 mile ride in. We drove to the flat path and got started a little before 8. The weather was actually quite cool, which was a huge bonus for Florida in June! Our plan had been to bike 20, turn around, and hit a breakfast place at mile 30. Shout out to Savannah’s Country buffet for being yummy and relatively cheap. It was a good old fashioned country type place but you know, sometimes those places have the best food. The last few miles were a bit rough but we survived! Got home and changed then went to the store. We had maybe 45 minutes before we had a meeting with a woman who is helping to facilitate our next beer competition. That was productive at least. Came home and I did laundry while we watched a cheesy movie called Action Jackson.

All in all, a weekend with a good balance between productivity and relaxing. My daughter comes back from her trip today and starts camp tomorrow. That will give me a thing to do each day. Summer is so weird because things you did that helped shape your day are gone. I find myself less and less motivated and organized with the things I must do. And that’s not good!

  1. Country type places tend to have the best food, I think. Most chain restaurants are too formulaic and lots of their food is frozen and then reheated. Congrats on surviving for twenty four hours without a phone! That would be hard for me to do, though I know I could. That’s great that you got new phones cheaper!

  2. I detest not having a phone for any length of time. I admit it. I’m slightly embarrassed about it . . .but it is true! It sounds like your weekend was the perfect blend of getting “all the things” done and relaxation!

  3. We don’t realize how often we reach for our phone until we can’t. I do know I’m on mine much less in the summer because we’re on the water a lot. I’ve lost a couple out there and think I’ve learned my lesson. Time will tell. I’m glad your hubs finally saw Gone With The Wind. That was a gap in his cultural knowledge for sure lol. Have a nice week!
