Friday Five – Stay so busy you can’t be bothered to worry

  1. That’s one of the Dale Carnegie suggestions: if you stay busy enough, you won’t have time to worry. He relates the story of a woman who was fraught with worry over her son in the war. She worried day and night whether he was dead in a trench somewhere. So she fired her cleaning lady and began cleaning the house herself. Except, she realized she could do those things and still be thinking about her son. So instead, she went out and got a job at a very busy shop and she said the customers kept her so busy it really took her mind off everything. So that’s about where I am. I am trying to stay afloat and keep working.
  2. This is all to say, this week I don’t feel like I did enough. There were days when I did the bare minimum and just could not get up the motivation. Thursday though, I was productive. I graded, rode 20 miles, brushed and skimmed the pool. I racked my blueberry maple mead to secondary and will wait another 2 weeks before transferring again and probably back-sweetening. I made dinner while the weather finally did get very stormy. Then Ash and I watched a couple movies. It was a nice night.
  3. I guess this week was a success in so much as I applied to a lot more jobs. I also reached out to people who might be associated with hiring at said places, in hopes they see my motivation as a positive thing. I am really hoping I hear back about a part time English position at this private school right up the road. You know, it’s funny how even if you taught college, K-12 in the public system is off-limits unless you have a certification or a degree in education. I know private schools are not beholden to that so I mean, maybe I have a chance? It’s a college prep kind of private school so you’d think my 21 years teaching college English would count for something!
  4. My daughter is leaving today to go to a family reunion with a friend. They offered to bring her along, mostly so their daughter has someone else. These only-children families do miss out on that companion aspect, you know?
  5. It’s about everything I can do right now to turn my mood around. I’m anxious, worried, fearing for the future. However, I did click on a Pin on Pinterest that was from a woman who writes a spiritual blog. She talked about how, all in one year, her husband lost his job and got cancer. She also listed 8 powerful prayers that helped her during that time. I think my main problem is I worry too much about what I don’t have and don’t focus enough on what I do have. So from this moment on, I am going to be more aware of that and trust that things work out…they always work out. Happy Friday, all!

  1. I hope your stress is held at bay and that you hear something soon! Regarding kids and siblings, of course my kids have siblings. When younger and kids “played,” my girls played together constantly and were truly each other’s best friend. That kinda left my son out (he didn’t care for Barbie dolls and American Girl dolls) so we always let him bring a friend if we were doing something fun so he had a buddy. In some ways, he was like an only child :(. I feel badly for him but it’s not like we could have a bunch of kids just to give everyone a buddy, lol. Have a great weekend!
