A to Z Challenge – Day 12

M is for Moments

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I am a huge day to day person. I like to slow things down and take things minute by minute. I’m currently reading “How to Stop Worrying and Start Living”, as noted in previous posts, and the idea of “day-tight” compartments really resonated with me. If you let your mind wander and worry about something you said 3 years ago or some day in the future that has not happened yet, you fail to see the small things happening now.

When I say moments, I think of so many tiny things. I think about the times we went on our annual beach trip with friends. For many years, we always met up with a huge group once a summer and all the kids had a great time. But one time, it started pouring rain and all the adults went out into the gulf and had a blast. Only later did we find out that sharks come out more in rain like that!

One other time, spur of the moment, we all went to a beach side place for dinner, which was chaos with so many of us, but those little moments make life.

I’m reminded of little things like seeing a double rainbow on our summer trip as we entered New Mexico after a rainstorm. Things like playing cornhole for practice with my daughter on a random Monday evening. A quick walk in the neighborhood where we catch sight of a rabbit in the springtime. A hug from my 17 year old after work, just because. A run where I feel motivated, not tired, and like I could run for many more miles. A sunset on a high summer evening, the sound of nature all around.

I had a particularly crappy Monday and my attitude was garbage about everything. But writing this post about the little moments that make life, I feel a whole lot better. I am calm, content, and able to go on; live my life today in its day-tight compartment. I am grateful for the little moments in life that make it worth living.

  1. I think blogging has really helped me notice and appreciate the little things more. Helps me to be more present. We took family beach trips with another family and. they were fun. I read recently kids remember family trips better than any holiday or birthday celebration we have for them. Have a great day…we’re halfway through the alphabet!
