Friday Five – These are the people in your neighborhood

  1. As I sit here in the burgeoning lightness of day, I hear my buddy, “Bob”, hooting in a nearby tree. He’s been active the past few mornings and I love to hear him, even if sometimes he wakes me up. It reminds me that nature goes on, no matter what issues in government people are losing their minds about, no matter what is going on in your own life, etc… I have been trying to stay away from both news and a lot of social media lately and I think it is doing wonders for me.
  2. I will say, I broke my rule about not getting on Facebook right away and I was greeted with really awful news when I did today. It was in regards to an old friend from middle school who lives here in town. I saw her once or twice over the past few years and our kids go to the same schools. We are not close but I did reach out to her not too long ago because I remember she worked for the police station and I had a student who needed an interview. Turns out she has some kind of rare (stage 4) cancer. The news today came from her husband reporting that treatment isn’t working and they’re going into hospice. This is so awful! I cannot even imagine what they’re feeling. It’s just really…sad.
  3. OK, happier topic! Ok, not really. LOL. We saw Magazine Dreams last night, which was…interesting. The story is of this guy who wants to be a body builder; it is his sole focus. As the story unfolds, we meet a guy with trauma in his past, potentially a lot of mental issues, and it is a weird tale of what he goes through. I would recommend it but won’t deign to admit it is “happy”. It’s a little gritty.
  4. Did I mention the claim I had to file with the city? Ok so bulk pickup is one big receptacle truck and the claw truck. I always said the guy driving that was really bad at claw redemption games and this time was no different. I was coming down the stairs and saw that the claw was taking our yard waste but one of the guys had gone across the street to grab a pallet a neighbor had left. He moved it to my side and it looked like he placed it next to my mailbox but later, when Isaac got home, I realized he’d placed it on my driveway and then dug out some of said driveway. Ash was pretty mad about it so I called the city and complained. Now a dude is coming out to assess it next Thursday.
  5. In reference to the same window I caught the above happening, I was walking up to talk to my middle yesterday and I saw a Sheriff SUV right across the street. So I stood and watched it unfold. I’ll post the pic below but I saw a snazzy little white car pulled over too, as well as a Nissan mini van in my driveway. There’s one Sheriff and two cop-looking guys with big vests. The perps, a mid-30s black man, perhaps, then one younger black woman. So I start constructing the potential story: they were racing and got pulled over; they were both speeding; one was speeding but it was a couple following each other so they both pulled over. Then, I see them consulting both and the black man hands the keys to one of the vested officers. I then see both man and woman put into handcuffs and place inside the SUV. One vested guy gets in their white car, the other, in the – what I now realize was – the undercover soccer mom car in my driveway, then they all drive away! I follow the police calls maps fairly closely and there was nothing. Ash proposes ICE, but Isaac said he thought it was a warrant and they’d been surveilling them. I don’t know but it was some high action on the street yesterday!

  1. Wow, that is some major drama- undercover cops! I’ve read memes about weird/odd people/situations in both Florida and Ohio! I stay off social media for the most part but am seemingly unable to give up checking the news (online) often and some of the political information websites that I visit. “Knowing” what’s happening is probably not good for me but I still feel like it’s important to know? I do know people who were like me and who have taken a step back. Maybe that’s not a bad idea for me either… Have a great weekend!
