Wednesday ‘Podge – Fairy Tales and such

1. February 26th is National Tell A Fairy Tale Day…have you read a fairy tale lately? What’s your favorite fairy tale? Do you believe in ‘happily ever after’?

I haven’t read one lately but there is a writer duo who I like to read (LJ Shen and Parker Huntington) and they utilize some fairy tale themes in her characters. For example, the one I am reading now, the main heroine is named Briar Rose and she has a form of amnesia, i.e. like Sleeping Beauty. I am not sure I have a favorite; maybe the boy who cried wolf?

I suppose I do believe in HEA; I like it in romance novels. LOL.

2. Complete one of the following sentences with a thought relating to your life currently-

  • Once upon a time___________
  • A long time ago________________
  • In a place far far away__________

Once upon a time…I wasn’t so stressed – or at least, I’d like to believe that but I have always worried about “what’s next?” I somehow think worrying will solve problems, though logically of course that isn’t true.

3. Which of the following ‘fairy tale foods’ is your favorite? Which have you made/eaten most recently?

porridge/oatmeal (Goldilocks and The Three Bears), an apple (Snow White), a gingerbread cookie (The Gingerbread Man), pumpkin soup/pie/bread (Cinderella), peas (The Princess and the Pea), beans (Jack and The Beanstalk) or a cup of tea (Alice in Wonderland)

Interesting questions! I would say pumpkin bread would be my favorite but eaten lately: beans in my white chili and I have been having lemon ginger tea in the evenings.

4. What’s your idea of fun?

Visiting a new brewery, a fire on a not-too-cold night, randomly being invited to do something, whether it’s a holiday party, day at the lake house, event at a local brewery or park

5. Next week’s Hodgepodge lands in March. Is that right? I guess so.  Give us one noun, one verb, and one adjective that tell us something about your February. To make you think a little harder, you cannot use the words cold or snowy.

FAST. It definitely did not drag for me.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

I am so tired of coming up with meal ideas every night. I go through phases where I make specific things all the time, then switch it up, then feel totally lost on what to make next. I am considering this garlic butter steak tips with cheesy rigatoni tonight. I have to vet it with my husband though because he’s the picky one. To be fair, he has liked: my thrown-together chicken alfredo, homemade hamburger helper, and my rip-off Carrabba’s chicken noodle soup. Each of them has one or two things in it he would previously have vetoed so, there’s that.

I am having my students work with their small groups today, which frees me up from having to come up with a lecture. I like to balance it; Mondays I explain and lecture and on Wednesdays, they have to participate in other ways. I cannot wait for Spring break though; today’s class then two more and I get a nice reprieve. These kids have been pretty good though so, no complaints.

OK, off to decide on a dinner recipe and work some more on grading!

  1. I do like the sound of LJ Shen and Parker Huntington books.
Ahh! I am a worrier and I get it, worrying doesn’t solve problems so why do we do it to ourselves!
I was like that when it came to meal ideas every night but now we subscribe to a recipe box and I chose 4 meals a week and have the ingredient’s sent to me. It sure stops me having to think up different things to eat as much.

  2. My hubby is a HUGE WORRIER. I’ve always heard that worrying about tomorrow robs the joy from today. For our Tuesday night YA group, I have a spreadsheet with menus (large portions) and I probably have about 14 or so tried and true menus and I just rotate randomly! I always hated coming up with ideas when our kids were still at home. I didn’t mind cooking or even cleaning up or buying the groceries . . .I just hated coming up with the ideas!

  3. I love sitting around the fire too. We had a fire on the porch last. night in the air b/b we’re in (they have a fireplace! we didn’t start a fire lol) and it was so cozy. I am with you on meal planning lately. I think next week i’ll have a share your. menu question and maybe we’ll all be inspired to try something new. Have a great day!

  4. It is so easy for me to get stuck in the what’s for dinner realm. OYE! Those are good ideas for fun. Hope you have some fun moments before February is behind us! Cheers!

  5. Randomly being invited to do something is nice- that’s a great example. I do kinda feel you with your dinner pain- fortunately my hubby is not fussy at all but I lived with a fussy child for eighteen years, lol. When all three kids were in the house, I don’t know how I did it. If their eating preferences were placed in a Venn diagram, only about three meals that they all liked would be in the middle! Your recent dinners sound really good!

    1. I hear you! I have about 3 meals that they will ALL eat: spaghetti, chicken chili, and pan-seared chicken with mashed potatoes. OK, four: lasagna. I don’t like spaghetti so there’s that. My middle doesn’t like tacos (SOMEHOW!) and my daughter hates vegetables. It’s so frustrating.
