Wednesday ‘Podge – Faves and whatnot

1. What is an adult problem nobody prepared you for?

Hmm, I guess generally speaking, the stress of SO many things all at once. No matter the age of your kids, there’s just so many things – big and small – going on. I mean, I guess that depends on your life but I mean, if I detailed all the little things that are swirling around my brain, it would be staggering. And I’m talking little things like “have to clean out the dryer vent” to things like “have to put some money aside for a new AC unit” and “Are my children prepared for the real world?” So even though my parents told me a lot of real life stuff and coping mechanisms, I don’t think they can prepare you for the onslaught of stuff.

2. Without mentioning any tech, what’s your most prized possession?

That’s kind of tough because I don’t really hold anything that special to me; I guess I can say the pocket watch my grandfather gave me that was his dad’s. It feels like a little token of his appreciation of my appreciation of old things.

3. It’s National Peach Ice Cream Day (July 17th). Will you be celebrating? Do you like peaches? Given a choice would you prefer peach ice cream, peach pie, peach cobbler, or just hand me a peach? Do you own anything that is peach in color?

I don’t typically celebrate any of those “national” days, really. I do enjoy peaches and enjoy all three of those desserts. Ice cream is great, cobbler is good. Pie is just ok but I typically don’t like regular pie crust. The only thing I own that is peach color is a workout top and I wore it on my walk last night. It’s actually a little too big on me.

4. What makes a friendship successful?

That’s complicated. To me it’s the shared understanding that the reason you get along will trump any other issues. I have friends I don’t see often but when we get together, all the similarities that made our conversations easy are still there.

5. Let’s give our brains a rest and do a little summertime this or that…beach or pool? ice cream or snowcone? amusement park or camping? burger or hot dog? watermelon or strawberries? get up early or sleep in late? sunrise or sunset?

Beach.

Ice Cream

Amusement Park

Burger

Strawberries

Get up Early

Sunset

I felt weird about not saying camping though we don’t hardly ever do it. I like the idea of it more than I enjoy coasters so there’s that. But a park is fun to visit. Also, I like both sunrises and sunsets but late summer evenings are my favorite time.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

My city has this summer backyard challenge where you have to check into 15 locations. So far, I have done 4, incidentally. There’s a brewery one so I was checking out how many more I needed and realized I can get some of the summer ones too, right around here where I work. So in a bit, I plan to do a little walk around the capitol complex and check in. Is it cheating to not actually go to these places? Maybe, but it’s still a fun little thing to do.

Last night was nice. I left work a little early because we had a slight issue: my lawn guy had a flat on his trailer when he got to the house and my friend (her hubs is my lawn guy) called me to say she brought him everything he needed but a jack! So she wanted to know if Elliot had one in his car (he was the only one home) but alas, he was ignoring his phone completely! It all kind of worked out because Ash got home and he had one so Joe was able to fix it. So I really left early for nothing but that was ok. We left around 5 to get the kids from camp and go to Mexican. There’s one location of our fave place that does a 5 dollar 3 taco meal on Tuesdays so that’s value! We had a nice time then once home, we watched Dogma with Elliot then a couple episodes of House of Dragons, which finally got good!

Today, I have a fingerprinting appointment later this afternoon; because I’m going to start working for a federally funded community college, I have to do it, even though it’s all online! Silly, I know. But the local college, which recently became a state college, also requires it. Hoping this trip will work for both!

  1. The Mexican restaurant within walking distance of our house has Taco Tuesday — $2 select tacos and $2.50 Mexican beer. It is the best deal around. To be honest, we don’t like that many things on their menu but these tacos are good – they usually offer ground beef, buffalo chicken, and adobo chicken. Sounds similar to your $5 deal.

    1. Yeah, once you find what you like, stick to it! To be fair, I always order a bowl there b/c it has everything: rice, beans, guac, pico, sour cream, cheese, and topped with grilled chicken. It’s def not 5 bucks!

      1. Ivam not keen on Mexican food but the deal sounds good.

Do you also get vetted as well as fingerprinted for these jobs?

I have also had my fill of camping.. nice idea but give me a luxury hotel with bathroom everytime now!

Dogma is a great film absolutely love it!

  2. I am with you on the idea of camping! I do love to be outside in beautiful locations. It´s the primitive conditions for a prolonged period of time (ie overnight) that throw me for a loop! I guess the government has to dot all its I´s and cross all of its T´s (just don´t ask them to secure a low pitched roof to a protect a former president…). I have to be fingerprinted to sub but that makes a lot more sense because I work directly with students.

  3. Excellent answer for #1. Yes, the watch is a great answer. Enjoyed your answers for #5. That backyard challenge sounds interesting. That’s a great value on those tacos. Congratulations on your job. Enjoy your day!

  4. I agree with the camping/ amusement park after reading your thoughts. I like camping, and don’t enjoy amusement rides anymore. But amusement parks can be very “amusing” otherwise.

I’ve had to be fingerprinted for jobs. Interesting mix of folks at the fingerprint place – teachers and criminals.

    1. LOL agreed – my son had to take a drug test at 14 to work for the city in sports and they were shocked about it. My son, meanwhile, was worried about the scary-looking folks nervously waiting to pee in a cup.

  5. I like how you said you like the idea of camping. I loved when hubby and I went camping, first alone and then with kids. But he did most of the work and we haven’t been since the boys were in their teens and they are both in their early 40’s now. I did go to a glamping crafting indoor retreat a couple of years ago and that was fun except I came back with Covid. I would love to go to Disneyland again, but it is so expensive now. Nice that you can work online and funny that they need your fingerprints. Have fun visiting those locations!

  6. Oh number one is so true, and that never seems to end. I thought life in retirement would be pretty uneventful, but sill there is always something. More than one something actually. Mexican food in general is a pretty good deal, and one of my favorite things to eat out. When we camp my hubs does almost all the work so I think that’s partly why we girls like it. Have a great day!

  7. We used to camp all the time. Now I much prefer a good comfy queen size bed with super cold A/C, lots of blankets and my own bathroom.

Not a fan of peaches. I’m hooked on oranges all the way, but, kinda on subject, I wonder what a peach flavored beer would taste like … 😁💙

  8. Good answer to #1 – there’s just always SOMETHING and I don’t think I was prepared for how life just keeps comin at me fast! LOL Congrats on the new job and I hope it works out really well! Have a great week!
