Watchmen review

I’ll be brief for those of you who have not seen it but here is my Watchmen take: As Tysdaddy said in last post’s comments, it is indeed faithful to the graphic novel in many ways and perhaps it is where it goes wrong. They pegged Rorschach to a tee, I felt. But other than that, they pretty much just copied dialogue word for word and didn’t do any sort of character development on their own. Now, if you want to see a literal novel interpretation, you got it. Ash would like to have seen some kind of other interpretation; take these characters and the story and show us something that is implied, take it one step further.

Now, the choice they made in cutting out the pirate ship/comic tie-in – to me – really added to the understatement of the “big idea”. I know that if they had kept it in, the movie would have been four hours long and people “wouldn’t get it.” But for those of us who understood why Alan Moore chose to juxtapose those two stories, we were sort of left hanging.

Now, when I left the theater – and throughout – I felt that my official opinion was that it is good but not great. Ash keeps finding things he does not like but then again, he also hated Fellowship of the Ring because he had just read the book. I read Watchmen early in my pregnancy and he read it only maybe 6-8 months ago. Maybe the time afforded me a more realistic and forgiving review.

As many complained, they changed the end. Not the overall, but a certain aspect of a scene and that made it kind of dumb. For that I was not happy but like I said, I still felt like it was a decent movie.

You just have to see it for yourself; if you haven’t read it, you may like it more. At least, that’s what most people are saying.

  1. I have the book, and tried to read it several months ago, but then life got busy and I never got back to it. So, since it’s out now, I’m going to wait and read it after I see the movie. Like you suggest, I want to go in with no real idea about the nuances of the story . . .
