STTN, A risk, and Martha

According to all “expert” baby books and articles, Sleeping Through The Night is only considered to be 5-6 hours. For the past three weeks, I would say that 16/21 days Elliot has “slept through the night”. One night, he slept for seven hours! Most nights he makes it about five. A couple nights, he only lasted four. Last night, I fed him at 10:30 and he got me up at 3:47. I don’t really mind waking up once a night. I know that I cannot make him change his schedule at the drop of a hat and I mean, this whole world is brand new to him – a completely different ballgame than what he was used to in the womb – so I’m going to cut him some slack. I will say though, when he wakes up at night now, he kicks the blanket off his legs (comes out of the swaddle) and makes little “enh enh” noises until I come in. Far better than the all out screaming he did as a newborn.

Today, I began using the Target brand diapers, as an experiment. Many people say they notice no difference in effectiveness and when a pack of diapers runs roughly seven dollars cheaper, it’s worth the risk. So far, they’ve held everything in. The only thing I don’t like is that the little tabbies are velcro-ish like Huggies. I use Pampers and they actually stick, you know? But we’re going to muscle through this bag and see how it goes. Aside from the fact that the outside covering is slightly crunchier, they’re probably the same damn thing.

Martha Stewart gets a lot of flack for that whole scandal thing she went through but you know, I still like her ideas. For Christmas, my mom got me the December issue of her magazine. I was thinking, wow mom, what a nice gift. (/endsarcasm). But she actually got me a year subscription. I have an entire year of creative table decorations, gardening tips, and exquisite appetizers to look forward to. I’m thrilled!

Elliot has been a semi-angel today compared to the last few. He has only cried twice and once I think because he was just bored. I sat him in the room with me while I tried out the used guitar I bought for Guitar Hero and he was perfectly fine. The little guy just needs to be moving or stimulated. He’s not satisfied to simply sit. Well, that’s fine by me. Maybe it’s an indication that he’ll do grand things with his life and not end up living in grandma’s basement. One can only hope!

  1. We’ve had him in the crib since day one but at his first and last feedings of the day, I lay in bed with him and we usually nap together. I know a lot of people do the co-sleeping, as you do, but for us, it wasn’t what we wanted. In the end, it’s working out.

  2. You know, I’m all about the generic brand of products. Now that I’ve been working in the grocery industry for 6 months or so and actually had an interview in the marketing department to work with “private label” products, I can say from experience and with confidence that the Target brand diaper is exactly the same as the more expensive products you’ve been using. The reason Target brand is cheaper is because Target is responsible for all the promos involved, whereas Pampers or Luvs is responsible for coupons or special sales, etc.
