First day on the job

Does anyone else think Eastern Promises looks, well, promising? It’s highly unlikely we’ll actually see it, since I feel all sorts of weird taking a small child to the movie theater, even though he’s proven to be a ridiculously (knock on wood) good baby on outings. We’ve been to the lab four times, the grocery store twice and once to Jenny’s Lunchbox and he slept peacefully or looked around suspiciously yet quietly, the whole time. Right now, he’s in his crib, just looking around. Seems like he’s trying to stay awake in the daytime now and sleep at night. They say it takes at least a month but he’s only nearing two weeks. That’s my boy. Heh heh.

Meanwhile, I am playing my ipod in there on “Labor stage 3” playlist, which consists of a lot of yoga/relaxation music, classical, and a bunch of Enya. They say that you should sing to your baby to get him to sleep but until yesterday, when I had to go out to actually pick up his birth certificate and Ash stayed home with the boy who would not stop crying for the world, we didn’t know it would work like magic. Ash said he sang whatever he could think of at first – TV theme songs, known lullabies – but he eventually ran out of ideas and ended up singing the beginning line of Silver Hawks over and over until Elliot went into a sort of trance and then fell fast asleep. It was… amazing.

I feel silly singing to him because I don’t think very much of my singing voice. I know he doesn’t care but I was still reserved. Last night, to ensure I could go back to sleep without getting right back up to calm him, I actually sang. The only song that came to mind whose lyrics I could remember in the wee small hours of the morning was “Crazy for you” by Madonna. And it worked and I got at least two sets of three hours of sleep. Yay for sleep!

It’s my official first day home alone with the boy. Sure, Ash was gone about five hours on Sunday but today is all day and all me. The first thing that happened was while I was feeding Ell on the living room couch. Suddenly the TV just turned off and the battery backup began to wail continuously. Sigh. So I moved the boy and the whole shebang into the bedroom where I watched an old episode of Saved by the Bell. Let me tell you, staying home with an infant is an exciting life. Next, I plan on taking inventory of the pantry and cleaning out my sock and underwear drawers. Ok, not really. I was thinking of either sleeping for an hour or showering. Or, as it’s looking like, feeding the little Hoover again.

P.S. Elliot came off the Bili-blanket yesterday. he’s under 10 now, which is good but I’m still suspicious. He has a doctor’s appointment on Thursday and I’m going to ask about a follow up blood test.
