Commando revived

Let’s start at the beginning of my emotional spiral downward yesterday. Ash called around 4:10 to tell me that the loan guy (we applied for a home equity line of credit) wanted us to know that my student loan was delinquent. I went “HUHHH??” and immediately logged into the Sallie Mae site. Normally, I have the payment page bookmarked and it tells me how much my monthly payment is (about 61 bucks) and I pay as much as I can, usually about a hundred bucks. This page failed to tell me that I still owed some kind of fee from back when I thought I was still deferred, which I thought got taken care of with my consolidation, but I guess not. SO, I had some outrageous (ok, 350 dollar) late fee that was screwing up my credit. It didn’t stop us from getting the loan but its out there.

I scraped all the money I had together and paid them all I could. I still owe about 20 bucks to remove the delinquency but knowing that I had about 5 dollars to my name made me feel like garbage. Especially since it was on account of a very stupid mistake. I went home and felt like crying but did this instead: unrolled my yoga mat, set up my Klipsch portable ipod speakers system, and relaxed. It wasn’t easy; I kept thinking about money and how I should have gone to yoga class, and how I thought Ash would be disappointed in me.  Luckily, when he got home he was extremely understanding (why do  I keep thinking he’s going to be mad? I don’t know) and he took me to dinner. The night before, all I wanted to eat were mashed potatoes. We went to Cracker Barrel and – of course – they were out of mashed potatoes. Ugh. But it was still a satisfying meal.

Afterwards, we went to the movies. Although there were a lot we hadn’t seen, we decided on Shooter. I am really glad we chose that movie because it was awesome. I think everyone can appreciate a good action film now and then, especially if a.) the acting is good b.) the action scenes are well put together and feasible and c.) there’s actually a plot. This movie had all of that and I was glad to see – finally – an R rated movie that didn’t earn that rating because of sex and drugs.  (They’re getting to be a cliche!) This movie was very reminiscent of 80’s and early 90’s action movies, a la Arnold. There’s even a scene that reminded me of the big Commando scene, where the one badass guy takes on all the other gun-wielding punks and it’s believable. I highly recommend this movie if you want something to watch for sheer entertainment for a couple hours. It really does have a complex story and lets you leave feeling like you could watch it again to catch more of the plot’s intricacies.

We still haven’t seen 300 but we’re hoping it will come to our IMAX. I want to see Meet the Robinsons, for the big headed T-rex alone. Pathfinder comes out soon too and I think that’ll be an interesting movie, regardless of how it does in theaters. I’ve learned that the big box-office hits sometimes aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. I mean, come on, Norbit was #1 for something like 4 weeks in a row. Did that look like a big flaming pile of crap or what??

So, what movies have you seen lately – rented or in theaters?
