So, gay baby names. That sounds so ignorant so I didn’t make it the title of this post. But as my husband and I have been thinking about children, we have also been throwing out names. If it’s a boy, we have chosen Elliot Michael. I have also chosen Robert Samuel for our second son. In the case of that. However, it seems apparent to me that there are certain names that America has come to associate with homosexuality. These are names like Connor, Dylan, Lance, Troy, Seth, and Bruce. (I have never seen a baby named Bruce but I do somehow relate it to a brutish type wearing leather chaps.) There are others out there and, of course, exceptions to the rules. I have known a very gay Drew and a very straight football player Drew. I knew a club kid named Lance whose boyfriend was Troy. However, one of my newer friends is named Lance and I am almost positive that he’s straight. It just seems that society – and maybe it’s movies that do this – makes us subconsciously associate being gay with your name. I know, that sounds so silly but it seems to be out there. Am I alone on this or does it seem that there’s a stigma surrounding these sorts of names?
Traditional espresso is served with a sugar cube, and a lemon rind. I like it with a little sugar but usually plain.
I love this post 😉
Well, what if you have a girl?
If you go by the Steel Magnolias formula, then all guys named Rick, Mark, or Steve who have track lighting must be gay.
Either I live in a box or missed the memo entitled: Gay Names in America.
I think this is truly ridiculous. Whether you believe that homosexuality is a trait preassigned by nature or a conscious choice made by an individual, the fact remains that the parents would have no idea ahead of time.
And what about those gays with particularly common names like Michael, David, Lisa and Pamela? Are all people with those names to be branded gay on the basis of the name they had no part in selecting? It seems to me that this is just a slightly better disguised form of generalization geared to discriminate.
LOL. ok ok, Dave, calm it down. You know I am not so ignorant as to believe that your name will make you gay. Come on, now. I was trying to stir up some controversy because it had come up – with a few different folks – that these were stereotypical gay names. I played the devil’s advocate here to see what people would say. I was sick of telling people in my blog what I had for lunch and talking about the weather. You know I am not trying to discriminate.
Come now, economically speaking those names do have a higher incidence of gaydom… I would even go so far as to say that they are the most sought after fake gay names as well. How many male models go by one of those names..
Let us not hide behind the veneer of status quo and see the light of statistics and observation.
